Simple

Whether you get manicures on the regular or you tend to go au naturel on your nails, it’s probably safe to say we all yearn for beautiful, healthy nails. If you do get bi-weekly manis or spend the time to DIY, it can be incredibly frustrating when a nail breaks. The reason is usually almost due to dry, brittle nails. If you find your nails are breaking often, don’t fret. Luckily there are some things you can do to improve the health of your nails and get the long, strong, and healthy nails you’ve been dreaming of. Here are some simple dos and don’ts to follow for strong, beautiful nails that don’t break.

Focus On Diet

As they say, you are what you eat. What you choose to put into your body can be directly reflected on the outside through the appearance of your nails as well as your skin and hair. Vitamin deficiencies often show up on nails in the form of changes in texture, color, and appearance. A healthy, well-balanced diet not only can improve your physical health but it can make your nails healthier, stronger, and more beautiful.

For optimal nail health, add foods packed with biotin into your diet like organ meats, eggs, fatty fish, sweet potatoes, and nuts and seeds. You can also take a biotin supplement to ensure you’re getting enough of this powerful B vitamin into your diet.

Use High-Quality Products

While diet is incredibly important for optimal nail health, what you choose to put topically onto your nails is equally so. Using non-toxic, high-quality products formulated with healthy ingredients can promote healthy growth and ensure your nails not only look great but are always strong and healthy.

Well known brands like SNS, OPI, and Gelish are safe choices. SNS actually formulate their products with nutrient-rich ingredients that nourish the nail beds and promote healthy, strong nails that don’t break. At your next salon visit, request not only a quality dip powder, gel, or lacquer, but pay attention to the bases and sealers used as well, as most of the nutrients will be applied during those steps.

Stay Out Of Hot Water

Having your hands in hot water too often can do a number on your nails, causing them to become weak and brittle which will ultimately break or peel, not to mention it can severely dry out your skin and cuticles. Try to wear gloves when doing the dishes and keep your hands out of the tub if you often take baths. However, if you do get into hot water, make sure to moisturize after with a good hand cream and apply cuticle oil to rehydrate your skin and nail beds.

Don’t Pick

While it can be so tempting to pick at a chipped or peeling manicure, DON’T do it, especially with gel polish. When you pick off your polish you can actually peel off a layer of your nail causing it to become thin, weak, and brittle. Instead, get your gel removed by a nail tech or use the correct at-home method to properly remove it and keep your nails looking their best.

Go Round

Square nails have a tendency to snag on things because of their sharp corners which can cause them to tear and break. To prevent this, opt for a more rounded shape like round, oval, or even squeal nails. The soft corners of these nail shapes are less likely to get caught on things.

DIY Honey and Avocado Face Mask

Wintertime often means dry, cracked, and chapped skin, especially facial skin. Our face is always exposed to the elements so it is more prone to the harsh winter elements and can all too often mean super dry, flaky, and red skin.

However, this issue can be solved with a few simple steps! Making your own natural, healthy, and moisturizing face mask can quickly repair damaged and dry skin.

This honey and avocado face mask is the perfect simple DIY face mask that will repair your dry skin super fast. With only 2 ingredients needed for this mask, it is an economical and easy option.

Key Points:

  • Facial skin is more prone to suffering dryness, flakiness, and redness in the cold winter months.
  • You don’t have to spend a ton of money on an organic and natural face mask from the store.
  • Simple ingredients you likely have at home can create a super moisturizing face mask.
  • Avocado is creamy and moisturizing with its abundance of natural oils.
  • Avocado soothes skin and can even help repair some skin damage from summer time.
  • Honey is moisturizing and antibacterial, which may help any stubborn acne you may be facing.
  • Honey draws moisture into the skin from the surrounding environment. It is then able to form a layer over the skin to lock in all the moisture.

How to Make a Simple Natural Honey and Avo Face Mask:

  2. Measure ¼ cup of honey, preferably raw and organic, and mix in well to the avocado

Simple Ways To Be Happier With Your Looks

by

How we look is important for most of us, and it is not always obvious what you should do in order to ensure that you are as happy as possible with this. However, as long as you are happy to make some basic changes to your approach, you should find that it is surprisingly easy to make a difference here. As it turns out, there are some very simple ways to be happier with your looks, and as long as you have thought about the following, these should be a lot more obvious to you. Let’s take a look right now.

Be Bold And Make A Change

If there are any specific changes you do want to make with your appearance, then bear in mind that there is nothing wrong with wanting to do that. As long as you are happy about it and you don’t feel pressured into it, then having a small procedure done for example, is going to be something worth doing for yourself. Just make sure you have a trusted doctor like Dr Jason Roth and that you have really thought about the procedure beforehand. Making this kind of change can help many people, however.

Ignore Media Standards

As far as possible, it is wise to try and pay less attention to the media standards that are all over the place. Of course, this can be a challenge, but ultimately you are genuinely free to ignore those beauty standards if you want to – and doing so could mean that you are much more likely to be happy with your looks. It can even take some practice to do this, but the results of it make it absolutely worthwhile. You might find it easier if you also limit your general media consumption, of course.

Appreciate The Importance Of Posture

If you are really keen to make sure that you are happy with your looks, one thing to focus on is your posture. This is something that it is always possible to improve, and you might be amazed at how much it can change how you feel about how you look. For one thing, it boosts your confidence, and it also genuinely makes anyone look more attractive when they are walking tall. So practice in whatever way you might need to, and make sure that you are appreciating the importance of posture as best as you can. It’s amazing how much it can help.

Don’t Compare Yourself To Others

Again, this might not always be easy, but as far as possible you should try to avoid comparing yourself to other people. Whether they are your friends, people in the media, or even just people you see on the street, it’s something that you are going to want to try and overcome at some point. This might be easier than you think, and it’s something that can make life so much more joyous, so make sure that you are thinking about that. If nothing else, you will find that your confidence is higher.

Try This Simple Trick To Make Your Eyes Look Brighter! (click through for details) I love when I find out about little makeup tricks that take hardly any time at all to apply and yet can make a big impact on your overall look. I certainly struggle with finding ways to make my eyes look wider and brighter (otherwise I sort of have that sleepy-all-day look about me). One quick little fix you can use is to line the bottom of your eye with a white eyeliner (I use this one) to really make your eyes pop!

Actually, the white liner on the bottom look was kind of a 60s makeup staple too, so you know I’m especially up for anything that gets the 60s glam stamp of approval.

Try This Simple Trick To Make Your Eyes Look Brighter! (click through for details) All you have to do is trace a creamy white liner on the lower waterline (the inside edge of your lower lash line), and your eyes look brighter in seconds! I usually pull down gently on the top of my cheekbone to make the waterline a bit easier to access while I apply the liner with the other hand.

Try This Simple Trick To Make Your Eyes Look Brighter! (click through for details) Try This Simple Trick To Make Your Eyes Look Brighter! (click through for details) See? It just makes the eyes pop a bit and helps them look fresher and more open. If you wear mascara on your lower lashes (also a big 60s thing), just make sure to apply the liner first and then your mascara. This trick will only add seconds to your makeup routine but will make all the difference – give it a try and see if you agree! xo. Laura

Does blush disappear on your face? It used to evaporate on mine, so I always left the house looking like a clown, hoping it would last till noon. Recently, I was lucky enough to have my makeup done at an event by our makeup artist and educator, the amazing Kevin Mendelson. He told if my blush disappears, then my skin was dehydrated. I started using Dream Tint Tinted Moisturizerevery day under my PurePressed Base Mineral Foundation (I used to just use it on weekends instead of foundation) and I also began taking omega fatty acid supplements. My skin looks more plump and smooth than it has in ages. Sometimes I even forget to moisturize after cleansing because it doesn’t feel tight! Best of all, I applied my makeup at 8 o’clock this morning and I just checked in the mirror (it’s 3 pm); I don’t need a touch up. No more disappearing blush!

9 Simple Ways To Change Your Look

by

You’re beautiful just the way you are, but that doesn’t mean that you have to commit to one look until you die. There’s no shame in switching up your wardrobe, makeup, or hair now and again.

Changing your look doesn’t have to be extreme or expensive. If you’re getting bored with your current duds, here are nine simple ways to switch up your appearance and unlock the new you.

1. Experiment With Colored Contacts

Your eyes are the focal point of your face. Whether or not you’ve been wearing glasses, colored contacts go a long way in helping change your look.

Spring for high-quality contacts like those offered through retailers like these. If you’re feeling indecisive or like to change your look often, you can experiment with different colors until you find the perfect match.

2. Brighten Your Smile

Brightening your smile is one of the easiest ways to make people notice that you’ve changed your appearance. All you need to do is whiten your teeth, which gives your whole face a radiant glow.

Charcoal toothpaste and whitening strips are ways to brighten up your pearly whites at home. Professional teeth whitening is the best bang for your buck if you’ve more money and time to devote to your makeover.

3. Try A New Hairstyle

If you’ve had the same hairstyle for months or years, it might be time to shake things up. Do some research into your face shape and which hairstyles are most complementary.

If a complete cut is off of the table, try styling your hair differently. Changing your hair can draw attention to different parts of your face and create a more flattering image, whether it’s straightening, curling, or braiding.

4. Trim Your Eyebrows

Don’t overlook your eyebrows as most people do. Trim and polish them well, and you’ll be surprised at how different you look. Take a spoolie and brush through your brows before using a pomade on any sparse areas. If you have lighter eyebrows, a touch of darker powder can make them stand out and heighten the expressivity of your face.

5. Try A New Shade Of Lipstick

Are you a one-lipstick-shade kind of lady? If so, you can catch many compliments by experimenting with different shades or even different finishes within your signature color.

For example, if you’re fond of wearing bright red lips, tweak things a bit with a nude lip shade. If you love your signature red too much to part with it, experiment with a matte, gloss, or semi-gloss finish.

6. Get A New Haircut

One thing about haircuts is that they can give you whatever look you want. A new haircut transforms your facial appearance and can help emphasize specific facial features.

Don’t limit yourself to regular haircuts. The great thing about hair is that it grows back, so don’t be afraid to step outside of your comfort zone.

7. Wear Jewelry

Jewelry has an immediate impact on one’s look. Adding jewelry to your favorite outfits is an excellent way to make it feel like you bought an entirely new wardrobe–without the exorbitant price tag.

8. Charm Up Your Eyes

In addition to changing your eye color with contacts, you can also tweak the shape of your eyes using makeup. Adding a dramatic cat-eye or a spot of contouring along your brows can make a world of difference in how your eyes appear to other people.

9. Color Your Hair

If you’re not afraid of a more long-term change to your appearance, you can pull out the bleach and hair dye for a switch-up that’s sure to turn heads. Finding a complementary color to your eye color will create a flattering color palette around your face.

Wrap up

Remember, beauty is not all about a pretty face. There’s much more to ways of improving your appearance, such as proper diet, staying hydrated, oral care, exercise, and sufficient rest. Incorporating these into your lifestyle will ensure you not only look good, but feel good too. The new you will love it.

5 Simple Remedies for Dry Winter Skin

by
BeautyPrep winter mineral makeup skincare to protect dry skin
As the seasons change, so should your skin care habits. In Great Barrington, MA and most of Northern Hemisphere, winter means one thing: cooler temperatures. The cold brings enchanting snow-covered trees, thrilling winter sports and an insatiable craving for hot cocoa. But, icy temps also mean dry air and drier skin. When the temperature drops, so does the humidity level. Combine dry air with harsh winds and central heating, and you get the perfect storm for chapped lips, itchy cracked hands and other signs of sensitive skin. When we start feeling the effects winter, these five simple winter skin care tips get us through it.

Winter Skin Care Tips & Tricks

1) S-U-N-S-C-R-E-E-N.

We cannot say it enough— sunscreen is the number one beauty essential year-round! If you’ve ever gone skiing or snowboarding, you know how strong winter sun is when combined with snow glare. Protect your skin from sun damage with sunscreen that contains SPF 15 or more. Jane’s winter favorites for sun protection, all year, are HandDrink SPF 15 Hand Creamand LipDrink SPF 15 Lip Balm.

2) Use a Humidifier

Do you ever wake up feeling like you just walked across the Sahara Desert? That’s because central heating zaps moisture from the air, causing your mouth, nose and even skin to feel dry. Add moisture back into the air (and your skin) by turning on a humidifier at night.

3) Amp Up the Hydration

Now that you’ve solved the problem of dry air, what’s next? Give your body a moisture boost. Drink plenty of water and use skin-quenching skin care products to hydrate from inside and outside. In the winter, Jane keeps her face free of dry-patches with BeautyPrep Face Moisturizer, which uses four organic Rose Stem Cell Extracts to protect your skin from trans-epidermal water loss. She also gives her makeup a long-lasting base by applying and moisture-rich Smooth Affair Facial Primer & Brightener.

4) Say No to Hot Showers

Similar to the way heated air can dry your skin, so can extra-hot water. While a long, steamy shower may sound delightful after a day in the cold, scalding water strips natural oils from your skin. Ensure your hydration efforts aren’t wasted by turning the water temperature down and keeping your showers short.

5) Limit Exposure to Wet Clothing

At some point during the snowy season, we all deal with wet clothing. Whether skiing, building a snow fort with your kids, or simply walking on slushy sidewalks, you will likely end up with wet socks or gloves. Wet fabric (especially wool) can irritate your skin, so remember to remove any wet garments as soon as you get inside.

Things We Love: The Pure & Simple Makeup Kit

by

The wonderful part about the products included in the Pure & Simple Makeup Kit is all of them can be used in multiple ways.

Different Ways to Use Mineral Foundation

By itself, PurePressed Base is a multitasking miracle worker. It’s a semi-matte foundation that contains broad spectrum SPF protection, and can be used as a concealer and setting powder. Plus, it’s packed with ingredients that have skincare benefits, like Pomegranate Extract that helps fight free-radical production and protect your skin. In the Pure & Simple Makeup Kit, we included two shades of PurePressed Base. Here’s why:

  1. It adjust with your tan. You can wear the lighter shade when your skin is a little paler and the darker shade for your sunkissed moments.
  2. You can mix the two shades to customize your foundation color.
  3. Lastly, the two shades can work as a highlighter or contour color depending on which one you use as foundation. If the light shade is your foundation, use the dark shade as contour, and vise versa for highlighter.

More Than Just Eye Shadow

We also had our reasons for including Oyster and Supernova PurePressed Eye Shadow. The first is, both shades are universally flattering. They also pair well together for a soft, yet defined eye makeup look, and they can easily double as other products.

You can use Oyster, the shimmery pearl shade, as a highlighter on your cheekbones, brow bones and your cupid’s bow. Any place you want a little extra glow, this eye shadow can be applied.

Supernova is a shimmery copper, eggplant shade, we recommend using it as the contour shade in your eye makeup look. Additionally, you can use it as an eyeliner if you wet the sponge applicator (or an Angle Liner/Brow Brush).

Double the Blushes, Double the Fun

The Pure & Simple Makeup Kit only contains one PurePressed Blush shade, but the Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain allows you to double up on your cheek color. This little lip product is a friend favorite for good reason. It uses your skin’s pH to develop a shade of peach (Forever Peach) or pink (Forever Pink) that is unique to you, and it lasts all day!

When we want to add subtle color to our cheeks, we use either PurePressed Blush or Just Kissed Lip and Cheek Stain, but when we want our cheekbones to pop, here’s how we do it:

  • First, apply Forever Peach or Forever Pink to the apples of your cheeks. You can do so from the tube or using the sponge applicator. Use your finger to blend it on the skin.
  • Then, brush on a layer of the PurePressed Blush from your kit to intensify the color.
  • Lastly, add a bit of Oyster PurePressed Eye Shadow to your cheek bones.

Pure. Simple. You.

Have you tried the Pure & Simple Makeup Kit? Comment below to tell us where you take it on-the-go, and share a picture of your Pure & Simple makeup look with us on Instagram using #BeautyWithBrilliance. Happy multitasking!

With school starting and the end of summer Fridays, fall marks a return to busy schedules. Buy yourself some extra time in the morning with these simple hairstyles for long hair. In just five minutes, you’ll be out the door with a simple, gorgeous updo.

For all of these simple updos, we recommend starting with a volumized base. Wash hair using Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Densifying Shampoo and Conditioner, which provide the perfect balance of moisture for bouncy volume. Comb a pea-size amount of Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Densifying Elixir through locks and blow-dry upside down for extra oomph.

The best part of all these simple hairstyles for long hair? They also can be styled with dirty hair! If you’re short on time, just spritz your roots with dry shampoo before styling.

7 Simple Styles for Long Hair to Try Now

1. The Sock Bun

sock bun updo chignon hairstyle best simple hairstyles long hair viviscal blog

Looking for an easy, simple hairstyle that adds volume to fine locks? This easy hairstyle uses any old (clean!) sock to give a classic bun a boost.

Cut the toe off of a pair of socks and roll into a donut. Alternatively, you can purchase a foam donut in the same shade as your hair. Brush hair into a high ponytail and secure with a hair tie. Next, place the donut around the bottom of the ponytail and pull the ends through. Wrap the ends all the way around the donut, and then slowly roll towards your head, covering the donut evenly as you roll to form the bun. Secure the donut with bobby pins.

2. Milkmaid Braids

blonde woman milkmaid braid updo hairstyle best simple hairstyles long hair viviscal blog

This simple updo for long hair is so cute, but also so easy. Part hair and divide into two sections. Braid each section and secure each with an elastic hair tie. To make braids look thicker, gently pull apart the sections of each braid. Next, cross the braids over the the crown of your head and secure with a few bobby pins.

3. Half Bun

This easy simple hairstyle is the perfect way to repurpose yesterday’s waves. Separate hair into two sections, one above ear level and one below. Gently tease the section above the ears, then pull into a ponytail and fasten with an elastic hair tie. Wrap the ponytail into a bun and secure with a few bobby pins.

4. Slick Ponytail

We love this simple hairstyle for long hair because it actually works better with greasy hair. Brush hair into a high ponytail and secure with an elastic hair tie. Use a gel or hairspray to smooth any flyaways. Gently tease your ponytail for extra volume. Take a small section of hair from the ponytail and wrap it around the base to conceal the hair tie. Then secure the hair with a bobby pin.

5. Braided Low Bun

low braided bun woman back best simple hairstyles long hair viviscal blog

This simple and easy hairstyle only looks complicated. Pull hair into a low ponytail, securing with a small hair tie. Braid the ponytail, then secure with a second hair tie. “Pancake” the braid by gently pulling apart the sections. This will give the braid more volume and width. Wrap the braid into a bun and secure with bobby pins.

6. Faux Chignon with Scarf

This simple hairstyle for long hair looks like an elegant chignon, but without all the complicated styling. Plus, it’s an easy way to incorporate more color into your look. Tie a silk scarf around your head and secure at the nape of the neck. Working in sections, tuck hair into the scarf, leaving the front exposed. Use bobby pins for extra hold.

7. The Off-Duty Ballerina

A skinny headband adds polish to this messy top knot. Pull hair into a high ponytail, then place a headband about one inch back from the hairline. Twist the ponytail into a bun and secure with several bobby pins. Use a tail comb to add volume to the crown by gently teasing out sections of hair at the roots. Finish with hairspray.
