Best Brown Nail Polish for 2022

by

Brown nail polish is too classic to ever go out of style. And people are more obsessed than ever with brown nail colors this fall. The earthy, dark-tone hue pairs well with any everyday look, from work wear to casual clothing. It’s not too loud a color to clash with your wardrobe, making it the ideal complementary shade for both daytime and evening attire.

Several brands offer their own variations of rich brown polish, from OPI to ORLY. Here are some of our top picks for the best brown nail polish shades on the market this season.

Best brown nail polish overview:

How we chose the best brown nail polish

To compile this list, we researched manufacturer specifications, including ingredients, formula quality, and more, to create a short list of the top brown nail polish products. Then, we combed through detailed product descriptions, ratings, and reviews to find the best brown nail polish for each category.

Our picks for the best brown nail polish

1

Best overall

OPI Nail Lacquer in That’s What Friends Are Thor

  • Longwear formula
  • Made in the USA
  • Site offers virtual try-on feature

  • Slightly more expensive than its competitors

OPI’s That’s What Friends Are Thor is an earthy, rich natural brown color with a crème finish for added shine and depth. The brown nail polish’s autumn-esque vibe feels delightfully fall glam. OPI’s long-wear formulas have great chip resistance, ensuring manicures and pedicures last up to a whole week.

The USA-made polish is just a tad bit pricier than its competitors. However, the price makes sense given the fact that it’s high-quality. Before buying, use OPI’s “Find Your Match” feature, which allows you to try on the brand’s different shades virtually, including That’s What Friends Are Thor.

Size: 0.5 fl oz | Finish: Crème

2

Best budget

Sally Hansen Insta-Dri in Cinna-Snap

  • Long lasting
  • Fast-drying formula with base and top coat
  • Available at most drugstores

  • Requires multiple coats (otherwise, it streaks)
  • Not chip-resistant

Sally Hansen’s Insta-Dri formula is the most affordable option on our list. Unlike most polishes, it dries in just 60 seconds, speeding up the application process. If you’re always on the go, this polish is ideal for those last-minute manicures and pedicures. Many big-box retailers carry Insta-Dri, including Walmart, Target, Walgreens, and Rite Aid.

The Insta-Dri formula has 33% longer wear than previous formulas and features a base and top coat. Sally Hansen’s Cinna-Snap hue leaves you with a reddish-brown, shiny finish that resembles beautiful fall leave colors. The brand advertises this 3-in-1 formula as chip-resistant, but you might get a different result if you don’t follow its application instructions — Insta-Dri requires multiple coat applications in order to last longer. Otherwise, the polish could easily streak when you apply it or chip shortly after it dries.

Size: 0.31 fl oz | Finish: Glossy

3

Best longwear

Olive & June in CN

  • Provides excellent coverage
  • Has a gel-like finish
  • Free of 15 toxic chemicals

  • Polish might chip or look streaky if applied incorrectly

Another longwear polish, Olive & June CN, is a top choice for salon-quality manicures and pedicures. Each coat provides generous coverage with its gel-like finish. The fan-shaped brush that comes with each polish makes way for easy application. This longwear formula is also easy to remove when you’re due for a fresh coat.

CN is a vegan and cruelty-free formula free of 15 well-known toxic chemicals, including acetone and formaldehyde. Just make sure to follow the application instructions, as the polish might chip or look streaky if you don’t.

Olive & June’s SN shade is advertised as a silky, sable brown. However, the color appears darker on nails than it does in advertised images. If you want this polish to last even longer, you can purchase the brand’s glossy top coat polish and manicure system separately.

Size: 0.46 fl oz | Finish: Gel-like

4

Best quick-dry

Essie Expressie in Take The Espresso

  • Dries in 60 seconds
  • Angled brush contributes to simple and seamless self-application
  • 1-step formula

  • Formula isn’t chip-resistant

If you’re primarily concerned about a polish’s drying time, check out Essie Expressie’s Take The Espresso polish. This one-step formula dries in 60 seconds after applying it to your nails. The angled brush for this polish also speeds up the application process. On top of that, its coffee-color Take The Espresso hue makes for the perfect addition to your fall wardrobe.

Essie Expressie’s formula might not be chip-resistant, but the vegan and eight-free formula contains no animal-derived ingredients or formaldehyde. If you use your hands a lot for work or daily activities, this might not be the polish for you since it chips easily. However, it is ideal for those on the go as it’s quick-drying.

Size: 0.33 fl oz | Finish: Glossy

5

Best nontoxic

ORLY in Prince Charming

  • Rich, brown hue
  • Glides smoothly onto your nails
  • A 13-free, vegan formula

  • Might chip without a top coat
  • Polish is slow-drying

Your nails are sensitive to toxic chemicals and ingredients, but ORLY’s 13-free, vegan formula excludes 13 nasty chemicals from the ingredient list. As the self-proclaimed originators of the French Manicure, ORLY continues to birth innovative collections with cutting-edge colors. Its Prince Charming hue has a royal brown, glossy finish that applies smoothly to your nails.

Note that Prince Charming might chip without a top coat. ORLY’s nontoxic formula is also slow-drying, so it warrants additional patience when self-applying.

Size: 0.6 fl oz | Finish: Crème

6

Best vegan

Ella + Mila in London Fog

  • Vegan and animal cruelty-free
  • 17-free formula (free of 17 toxic ingredients)
  • Quick-dry polish with chip-resistance

  • Inaccurate color description

Finding vegan nail polish products used to be a challenge, but not anymore. Ella + Mila is a 17-free, vegan, and animal cruelty-free formula. Parabens and acetone are among the 17 ingredients that the formula omits. This polish is also both quick-drying and chip-resistant.

Although Ella + Mila advertises its London Fog hue as a chocolate brown, it comes out more like a greyish brown. You might not have this color-matching issue with this brand’s competitors, but if you’re looking for a true vegan formula, Ella + Mila is the one.

Size: 0.45 fl oz | Finish: Glossy

7

Best splurge

Chanel LE VERNIS in Clair De Lune

  • Designer brand
  • Longwear formula
  • Chip-resistant polish

  • Designer price tag (expensive)

Chanel’s nail-strengthening LE VERNIS polish makes for a sound investment if you care more about quality and less about price. The carefully selected golden brown pigment, Claire De Lune, offers stellar coverage with a beautiful metallic finish.

LE VERNISH is a long-lasting formula. Since it’s highly chip-resistant, you can get away with wearing a manicure or pedicure for more extended periods. However, this polish is expensive, which is no surprise given the weight of the Chanel name.

Size: 0.4 fl oz | Finish: Metallic

Nailing down our number one brown

Different nail polish products offer great versatility within formula and color variety. Some polishes dry faster, while others last longer. Brown colors range from light to dark on the color spectrum. The OPI That’s What Friends Are Thor polish impressed us with its longwear formula and rich brown hue.

How to pick the right brown nail polish for you

Finding the ideal nail polish requires a deeper look into the product’s ingredients and formula quality. Make a note of these important factors when you’re deciding on a brown polish.

Ingredients

  • Toxic chemicals. Brands indicate which ingredients they don’t use in their products. Seeing “10-free” means that that brand’s products are free of 10 well-known toxic chemicals.
  • Finish. Typical polish finishes include glossy, matte, and metallic. Choose a glossy finish for shinier nails. Matte finishes result in a more classic, minimal look. If you really want to stand out, go for a metallic finish.

Formula Quality

  • Longwear. If a polish is chip-resistant or lasts for a minimum of one week, the polish most likely has a longwear formula. This means that you’ll enjoy longer wear with your manicures and pedicures.
  • Quick-dry formula. These formulas typically dry within a matter of seconds after application.
  • Color quality. Brown hues range from light to dark. Higher-quality polish formulas tend to have richer color hues that closely match what you see in advertisements when applied to your nails.

Natural nail polish 101 (click through for more!)Last year a blog reader informed me that nail polish is one of the most toxic things we put on our bodies. So, when I started to consider switching to a more natural beauty routine this year, polish was the first thing I addressed.

I quickly noticed that natural polish is typically twice if not three times the price of a drugstore brand. Over the past few months, I’ve been testing several brands and I wanted to share what I found with you today. Hopefully my advice can help steer you in the right direction so you don’t have to waste money on products that aren’t as good as others.

And as always, I want to open up the comments to your thoughts and opinions. I’ve already had several good recommendations from you guys!

I Love NP (both bottles pictured above with black handles)
This Etsy shop offers 3-Free (free of toluene, formaldehyde, or dibutyl phthalate) polishes in fun colors and holographic finishes. My favorite color I’ve purchased from them is Juliette, a rose gold holographic polish. It’s a pretty pink glitter that is easy to wear and looks amazing in the sunlight. I also like their coral neon, which is pictured above. I will definitely try more in the future.

Natural nail polish 101 (click through for more!)Habit Cosmetics

My friend, Natalie, introduced me to Habit. They have amazing colors to choose from and really cute bamboo lid packaging. So far I have tried Tabou (a bright orange-y red) and Belle Epoque (dark lavender). I also tried their top and bottom coat.

I am super pleased with the quality of both these polishes and want to try more colors. I’m curious how the lighter colors will hold up, and I want to try Bardot next.

Also, Laura’s nail color in the photo above is Mineral Fusion in Pebble (this is a good brand that dries quickly).

Natural nail polish 101 (click through for more!)TenOverTen

This is actually the first brand I tried. They are 8-free (free of formaldehyde, dibutyl phthalate (DBP), toluene, formaldehyde resin, camphor, ethyl tosylamide, xylene, and parabens), which is one of the best I’ve seen. For my personal taste, they also have the best packaging.

I like the colors a lot, but some bottles are better than others. Their black is AMAZING. Wouldn’t recommend their white (still looking for a full coverage true white if anyone knows of one!)

When I wear the darker colors, I tend to need to touch them up about once a day. I’ve always had issues with keeping my nail polish “perfect” for more than a day or two. So, this isn’t a deal breaker for me. I’ve been an Essie wearer in the past (the durability of these is equal, if not better).

With that said, I fully expected these natural products to suck and they do not. They are honestly all pretty equivalent to what I’d normally buy.

Natural nail polish 101 (click through for more!)Well, these are all my experiences so far! If you want to get started with a more natural nail polish regimen, I suggest Habit or TenOverTen. They both have a top and bottom coat you can buy, which helps it last longer. I will definitely keep collecting colors from both those brands. I will also keep shopping at I Love NP for glittery and holographic finishes.

I am a true believer in these products and am really glad I invested a little time and money into figuring out what works best for me. I love wearing nail polish, so once I found out how toxic it was, it was constantly bugging me. Now I can enjoy it again!

Next we want to try a natural nail salon (we just found out about this one in Nashville!) to see if we can pick up some helpful tips and recommendations.

And speaking of recommendations, please let us know if you have tried any nail products that have impressed you! xoxo- Elsie

Holographic and Iridescent Nail Polish

by

Holographic and Iridescent Nail Polish (best of guide!)I’m loving the holographic and iridescent trend that’s happening right now. My inner 1990s’ teenager is all about it!

So, I ordered a whole bunch of nail polishes to test out and ended up having more than one favorite! I’ll mark my personal favorites with *stars throughout the text.

Iridescent Nail PolishIridescent polishes for “mermaid nails”.

OPI Fireflies OPI Nail Polish in Fireflies

I really like how this polish looks when it reflects light. It’s kind of like the inside of an oyster’s shell. It’s really pretty and subtle. For me, maybe just a little bit too yellow though.

Mirage Nail Polish in Cotton Candy*Mirage Nail Polish in Cotton Candy

I’m a person who loves packaging and this isn’t the prettiest bottle. With that said, it was actually my favorite iridescent polish because it was so light and reflective. In this photo I am wearing a coat of lavender under it. I think it would be really pretty with a base of white as well. Legit mermaid nails!

Sally Hansen Lustre Shine in MoonstoneSally Hansen Lustre Shine Nail Polish in Moonstone

This is super pretty, but I’m not sure I would call it iridescent. It’s more like a shiny pearl color. It was less dramatic on my nails than in the bottle.

Revlon Matte Pearl Glaze Nail Polish*Revlon Transforming Effects in Matte Pearl Glaze

This polish is the only one I found at Walgreens. It’s got a really weird, fun glow to it. I’m on the fence with matte polish (sometimes I love them, sometimes not so much). Personally, I love it even more with a shiny top coat like this:

Revlon Matte Pearl Glaze Nail Polish (with shiny top coat)It’s subtle, but so pretty.

Holographic Nail PolishHolographic polishes for “disco ball nails”.

China Glaze Hologram Holographic Cosmic Dust China Glaze Hologlam Holographic in Cosmic Dust .5 fl oz

This polish read more as dark silver than holographic (in any light), but Emma complimented it when we had lunch one day. So I guess it gets some bonus points for that.

Mod Lacquer High StrangenessMod Lacquer High Strangeness

This polish read more as silver/purple too UNTIL you went outside in bright light, and then….

Mod Lacquer High Strangeness A-mazing!

Sadly, this Etsy shop stopped selling before I completed this post, but another polish that I got from Amazon was SO similar that I didn’t even take new photos. They’re basically identical—Color Club Holographic Halo in Blue Heaven

.

Born Pretty Holographic Polish 01Born Pretty Holographic Polish 01*Born Pretty Holographic Holo Glitter Nail Polish

This is also highly holographic in direct sunlight. But I love this one even more because indoors it reads as light silver instead of dark silver. It’s a keeper!

Holographic and Iridescent Nail Polish (best of guide!) That was SO fun! What should I try next? xx. Elsie

Make Your Own Custom Color Nail Polish

by

Make Your Own Custom Color Nail Polish (click through for tutorial)

If you’ve ever searched in vain for that special shade of pink or the perfect sheer glittery polish, this project is for you! By combining a ready-to-use polish base with your own blend of mineral colorants, you can create your own original shades of nail polish in minutes! This project is a really fun way to bring DIY nail art to the next level.

I like using a 3-free suspending base to make my own nail polish, but if you prefer using polishes that are 5-free or 8-free, you can use your favorite clear nail polish instead. This 8-free topcoat would be a good choice. Just keep in mind that regular clear polish may not suspend the colorants as well as a suspending base, so you’ll need to shake the polish a little bit longer before use.

Make Your Own Custom Nail Polish (click through for tutorial)

You can use pretty much any oil-based or oil-dispersible cosmetic colorant to color your nail polish. Just make sure that whatever you are using is made for cosmetic use. Craft glitters, food dyes or other non-cosmetic colorants might not behave well in nail polish since they aren’t designed for that purpose.

My favorite colorants for nail polish are mineral micas. These powdered colorants provide shimmering color in a whole rainbow of shades. For bright colored shades that are clear and glossy, look for oil-dispersible colorants like ultramarines and oxides. For matte color, try adding a pinch of cornstarch.

Make Your Own Custom Color Nail Polish

Supplies:
–suspending nail polish base
–empty nail polish bottles with tops and nail polish mixing balls
–miniature funnels
–micas, oil-based colorants, and/or cosmetic glitters
-popsicle sticks or miniature scoops

Make Your Own Custom Nail Polish (click through for tutorial)

Step One: Place the nail polish mixing balls into the empty polish bottles, and insert a miniature funnel into the bottle’s neck.

Step Two: Use the tip of a popsicle stick or a miniature scoop to add glitter or colorants to the funnel. You can stick to one color or create your own blends by mixing multiple colorants together. Add a large pinch of color to make a sheer polish or as much as 1/4-1/2 teaspoon for a heavier, more opaque color.

Make Your Own Custom Nail Polish (click through for tutorial)

Step Three: Gently tap the bottle and funnel to drop the colorant into the bottle. Be careful not to spill the colorants or get glitter everywhere. This part can be VERY messy!

Step Four: Remove the funnel, carefully fill the bottle with polish base, and screw the cap onto the bottle.

Step Five:
Shake. Shake. Shake. It will take a lot of effort to mix the polish for the first time. Shake the bottle for 30-60 seconds, or until the colors are well blended into the base.

Step Five:
Apply to your nails! Be sure to use a good base coat and top coat along with your custom polish. This will help make the color last and show off your gorgeous custom polish its best.

I had so much fun blending new nail polish colors for this project. Now that I’ve got the basics figured out, I can’t wait to try my hand at something more advanced. Galaxy nail polish? Mood nails? Glow in the dark manicures? The possibilities are pretty exciting and these gold nail decals would be pretty cute on top of your favorite color. You can see all our nail DIYs and tutorials here and if you are into natural nail polish, this is a great resource to find your perfect brand! xo. Mary Helen

The Best Nail Polish for Your Skin Tone

by

There’s a lot more to choosing a nail polish color than based on your mood or preference. In fact, when it comes to nail colors your choice should be based on your skin tone.

For each skin tone, there are certain nail polish colors that complement your skin color, go best with your complexion, and offer a flattering look.

  • Nail polish colors for fair or pale skin tone

nail colors - nail polish - nail polish colors - summer nail colors - nude nail colors - white nail polish - summer nail colors 2020 - cute nail colors - black and red nails - skin tone - colors skin - best nail polish for your skin tone - nail colors 2020 - best nail color for your skin tone -

If you have a pale skin tone, you need to use nail polish shade that compliments your skin color so you don’t look even paler. While you can choose different directions, for fair complexions, the best nail polish for your skin tone consists of lighter shades with pink or blue undertones.

Or if you’re looking to give a bold statement that speaks with confidence, you can choose a dark, rich color such as black or short red.

Having fair skin tone does not men nude nail colors aren’t an option, but it just means that you need to opt for a nail color that is a few shades lighter or darker than your actual skin tone.

If you have an olive undertone, the best nail color for your skin tone is a bold, dark color that compliments your complexion. In this case, dark burgundy or wine color should be your go-to. However, pretty much any color works flawlessly with olive skin tone.

For summer nail colors you could also choose vibrant blues, peachy pinks, and oranges, too.

Nail colors for dark skin tones in 2020 include oranges, fuchsia pinks, and neons.  But you can also never go wrong with a classic nude. For your summer nails, you should focus on floral shades of red or pink. If you’re looking for a nail polish shade to match your tanned summer skin, then a poppy blue or orange should be your best bet.
