Last week we hosted a garden party for our blogger friends in New York City. The weather has been anything but spring-like these past couple months and we were all looking forward to leaving the snow and salt behind us as we stepped into a little escape of flowers, games and of course, new makeup! The event launched the new Magic Hour collection and began a our 20th anniversary celebration (more on that later). The new Collection_nobrush_horizontalcollection was inspired by our iconic Moonglow Quad Bronzer, which bathes skin in that special light we see just at sunset. The Magic Hour collection features two new Lip Fixations, a flirtatious coral, Craze and a flattering mauve, Compulsion. It also features a gorgeous new PurePressed Eye Shadow triplecalled Golden Girl with three glimmering shades that can be worn alone or together: a deep bronze, a shimmering dusty rose and a rich gold. There is a new shade of our popular In Touch Highlighter, a warm golden peach called Comfortand a brand new inky gel eyeliner in a pot, Jelly Jar Gel Eyeliner (a new personal favorite of mine!) in Black and Brown.

How to Stay Matte for Every Occasion

Oily skin is often a challenge in the summer months. We spoke with our Global Makeup Educators Edgar Dominguez, Hannah Hatcher, Shawn Towne and Tricia Campbell, to get tips on how to stay perfectly matte and oil-free whether you’re at work or heading to a wedding.

According to our Global Makeup Educators, there are three steps to an all-day matte finish.

  1. smooth affair oil control primer, mattifying primerStart with a good base. If you have oily skin, we suggest using Smooth Affair for Oily Skin Facial Primer. It contains a revolutionary PoreAway technology that helps reduce shine, the appearance of pores and clogged pores, and create a smooth matte finish.
  2. Apply your foundation and makeup as usual; Hannah suggests using “a lightweight matte foundation like Dream Tint Tinted Moisturizer to help cut down on oily shine and to help keep you matte all day.”
  3. Finish your look with Amazing Matte Loose Finish Powder or PureMatte Finish Powder. They both contain Rice Starch to soothe skin, absorb oil and eliminate shine. If you need a boost throughout the day spritz Balance Hydration Spray on your face; it’s formulated specifically to help balance skin’s oil production and pH.

beyond matte HD mattifying powderIf you’re heading to the beach or doing any activity where you’re likely to sweat, Edgar recommends increasing the oil-control power by using Beyond Matte HD Mattifying Powder. “It contains an ingredient called acrylates crosspolymer, which is amazing for oil absorbing,” he says. “Having that special water-resistant ingredient also makes it the perfect summer product, especially in the hottest most humid climates.”

absence oil control primerIf you’re attending a wedding or any special event where you’ll be in front of the camera, our Global Educators have two suggestions – Beyond Matte and Absence Oil Control Primer. “Beyond Matte is better for people with especially oily skin or for special occasions when you really want your skin to look matte for longer periods of time,” says Shawn. “The proprietary technology in the formula helps control shine for hours and minimize the appearance of texture. It literally makes the skin look smoother.” For brides, our Global Educators suggest using Absence as a primer because it keeps your makeup color true all day and contains Kelp Extract and Hydrated Silica, which holds up to seven times its molecular weight in moisture, to balance and absorb excess oil.

Oil control is not just something that should be managed on the surface. “You have to work from the inside out,” says Tricia. She suggests combining a daily supplement of Skin Accumax with a good overall skincare regimen and lots of water – often times, oily skin can be a reaction to dehydration. When preparing for a formal event, choosing the right hairstyle is absolutely critical. You want to look your best, and having great hair is such a big part of that! But with so many formal hairstyles out there, it can be tough to make a decision.

Whether you’re choosing a hairstyle for a wedding, formal party, homecoming dance or college formal, or another big event, these hairstyles will be the perfect complement to your formal look. Plus, these formal hairstyles are timelessly elegant — but not stuffy! — so you won’t look back at your pictures in 10 years and cringe.

Keep reading for our picks for the best formal hairstyles for your next big event and how to style them at home.

The Best Formal Hairstyles for Big Occasions

Try these updated takes on four classic formal styles.

Classic Chignon

The classic chignon is a polished formal hairstyle that is perfect for weddings, formals or other black-tie affairs. Plus, we love that it works well for fine and thin hair. Here’s how to style a classic chignon at home:

  1. Spritz hair with a texturizing spray for hold.
  2. Gently tease hair at the crown for volume.
  3. Curl hair below the ears into waves using a 1-inch curling iron.
  4. Smooth hair over the teased crown, then pull hair back into a loose ponytail. Leave out a section of hair in front of each ear. Secure the ponytail with a hair tie one inch away from the scalp.
  5. Separate the hair above the hair tie into two sections to create a hole, then flip the ponytail through the hole.
  6. Tease the ponytail, then wrap around into a bun and pin.
  7. Twist or braid the front sections around the bun to cover the hair tie. Then pin to secure.
  8. Finish with hairspray for extra hold.

Vintage Waves

The side part and sleek waves add a retro twist to your formal look. You can pair the style with an accessory like a rhinestone hair clip for an extra touch of sparkle. Here’s how to accomplish this glamorous wedding-ready hairstyle at home:

  1. Spray hair with a light-hold hairspray and brush hair to distribute product. Part hair to the side.
  2. Using a one-inch barrel curling iron, curl hair in sections towards your face.
  3. After curling each section, pin the curl to your head using a duckbill hair clip.
  4. Repeat with all hair and allow curls to cool.
  5. Once curls are cool, remove the hair clips and brush out curls for soft, glamorous waves.
  6. Tame any flyaways with an anti-frizz serum.

Half-Up Twist

This is a great wedding, formal event or homecoming hairstyle for women with shoulder-length hair. If you want a more bohemian look, you could also add small sprigs of flowers into the twists. Here’s how to style this half-up twist at home:

  1. Style hair into soft, messy waves using a one-inch curling iron and a texturizing spray.
  2. Take a one-inch section of hair from just above the ear and twist, adding more hair as you move to the back of the head.
  3. Pin the twist in place with bobby pins, being careful to hide them inside of the twist.
  4. Finish with hairspray for extra hold.

Messy Low Bun

The messy texture of this bridal hairstyle helps to give thin, fine hair a little extra volume. Plus, it’s very easy to style at home!

  1. Use a texturizing spray to give hair more grip, then gently backcomb from the crown for volume.
  2. Use a curling iron to curl hair, then pin the curls at the nape of the neck to form the look of a bun. For a more romantic vibe, leave some curled tendrils around the face.

Tips for Prepping Hair for a Formal Event

Whether you’re getting ready for an upcoming wedding, dance or other formal event, follow these tips to make sure your hair looks amazing on your big day.

  • For stronger, healthier hair, start taking Viviscal supplements at least three months before your formal event. Viviscal promotes existing hair growth by nourishing the hair follicles from within.*
  • If you color your hair, make an appointment to visit your colorist for a root touch-up 10-14 days before your event. This way you’ll have time to make changes to your planned style (if necessary).
  • Begin deep conditioning hair weekly or biweekly up to three months before your event
While we recommend getting hair trimmed every 8-12 weeks to minimize split ends, if your formal hairstyle requires more length, avoid having a haircut in the month leading up to your event.

9 Ponytails for Every Occasion

The ponytail. Undoubtedly one of the most popular and versatile hairstyles out there. The popularity of this `do however doesn’t mean that you have to keep it basic. Whether you prefer to wear your pony sleek and high or loose to the side, we’re confident you’ll fall in love with one of these nine variations.

Love these looks but don’t have the length or volume to pull them off? Simply add in your Luxy Hair extensions to take your ponytail game to the next level. Clipping in extensions for a ponytail can take some practice, so be sure to check out our tutorial where we share three ways to use hair extensions to add length and volume to any ponytail look.

1. High & Sleek Pony

We are obsessed with this perky, sky-high ponytail. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be Beyonce to pull off this sleek look. The trick to this smooth, slicked-back `do is to take a two-ponytail approach. First, create a small “base” ponytail before sweeping back the rest of the hair around it. By creating this anchor, your ponytail will stay sleek and won’t droop down from extra weight. Add some cascading curls and wrap the base of your pony with a two-clip weft of your fave Luxy Hair extensions for an extra-polished vibe.

2. Low Side Ponytail

The best part about this tousled look is that works best on second-day hair. Yes, you heard us, you don’t have to wash your hair for this one – simply add some dry shampoo and pull your locks into a low pony. This side ponytail looks amazing with natural waves or a loose curl, creating a feminine twist. To complete the look, pull out some face-framing strands and give them a gentle curl. Swoon.

3. Dutch Braid Ponytail

Now this one has rocker-chic written all over it. We love the edginess that the dutch braid “mohawk” adds to the look. Paired with a tousled and voluminous ponytail, this look is both eye-catching and effortless. Embrace your texture with this look by adding a sea salt spray to enhance your natural waves. Rock on!

4. Bubble Braid Ponytail

This runway-inspired pony gives us major Princess Jasmine vibes. But don’t get the wrong idea about this look, it’s super easy to create. Clip in your Luxy Hair extensions and follow along with this step-by-step tutorial from the Luxy Hair blog. Perfect for a romantic date, we’re confident this hairstyle will have you feeling ready to be swept away on a magic carpet ride. Just make sure you have at least

5. The Half-Up Pony

easy half-up ponytail

In 2018, we’re seeing the top not being replaced with an effortless half-up ponytail. We love this look because you can add your own twist to it depending on how you feel. Whether you want to embrace or natural texture or opt for more glam loose curls, you really can have fun with it. We have to give props to the talented, Jen Atkin, who first introduced this look on the Kardashians and Chrissy Teigen.

6. Wrapped Pony

how to create a wrapped ponytail

The wrapped pony has such a feminine and pretty touch to it, we can’t get enough. After putting your hair in a ponytail, whether high or low, take a chunk of hair and wrap it around the base of your ponytail, adding some bobby pins in to secure it. This simple detail elevates a normal ponytail to a party-ready look in less than a minute. Sounds like the perfect solution to your next night out look 😉

7. Braided Pony

This look braided ponytail is the perfect look to add in some Luxy Hair extensions. Even if you aren’t blessed with naturally long locks, adding a couple of 3-clip wefts to your ponytail before braided will take this look to the next level. We love how Blake Lively’s stylist added lots of texture to this ponytail to enhance the bohemian vibes. Recreate similar effect by teasing your hair and pulling out strands to create lots of volume – beachy and beautiful.

8. Centre Part Pony

One of the easiest ways to spice up your ponytail game is to change where you part your hair. If you usually rock a side part, mix things up with a sleek centre-part ponytail like Selena’s. The key to recreating this look is to add a couple of drops of your favorite hair oil. Sleek, shiny, and oh-so-stunning.

9. Blair Waldorf-Inspired Ponytail

ponytail with bow

With Gossip Girl back on Netflix, we had to turn to our fave character, Blair Waldorf for some major hair inspiration. A simple hair accessory like a hair bow can be the easiest way to elevate your ponytail. To recreate this look is to create your favorite ponytail – we think a low pony looks extra chic – and tie a bow of your choice around the base. Rock this preppy look and soon you’ll be signing off all of your messages XOXO.

Are you a ponytail girl? Share your ponytails hairstyles on Instagram and tag @luxyhair. We’d love to see which style you recreate.
