“I don’t need a moisturizer in hot weather,” you may say. “My skin is oily enough!”

It’s true that many people with oily skin will notice more oil in the hot summer months. That may lead you to believe that it’s best to put away the moisturizer until the weather cools off again.

But that would be a mistake. Here’s why.

Moisturizer in Hot Weather: Why the Skin Gets Oilier in the Summer

The summer weather can take a toll on your skin. Hot temperatures, sun exposure, and dry indoor air all work together to cause problems in the skin you may not have noticed during the cooler winter months.

Our bodies react to warm weather with a sort of natural air conditioning: we sweat more, and when that sweat evaporates, it cools us off. Sweat is composed of mostly water, which means that the more we sweat, the more dehydrated we get.

The body has a second response to heat—it increases the production of skin oil, called “sebum.” This oil is a complex mix of fatty acids, sugars, waxes, and other natural chemicals that form a protective layer over the skin. The body produces this oil to help slow the evaporation of sweat, thereby extending the cooling effects.

Summer can also come with increased humidity levels, depending on where you live. Humidity is not a friend to your skin, particularly if you’re acne-prone or have oily skin. It leads to a greater increase in oil production from the sebaceous glands.

Increased levels of sebum can mix with the sweat your skin produces as well as any dead skin cells that may be resting on the surface of the skin. Add in the dirt and debris your skin collects during the day and you have the perfect conditions for an acne breakout.

Hot Weather Moisturizer

Moisturizer in Hot Weather: How to Deal with Excess Oil

Before we talk about moisturizer, let’s address the main problem: all that excess oil. How do you deal with it?

We have some tips that will help:

Cleanse Properly

The cleanser you used in the winter may not be working for you in the summer. Consider an oil-control cleanser—one that includes glycolic acid may be very effective. Use a skin brush to get deep into your pores.

Don’t Cleanse Too Much

You may be tempted to cleanse more often to get rid of the oil. Resist this temptation, as it can strip your skin of its oils, causing it to produce even more. Cleansing twice a day is adequate.

Refresh with a Toner

After cleansing, refresh and hydrate the skin with a moisturizing toner like our Rescue + Relief Spray. It helps balance the skin’s oil production while providing a light moisturizing effect that will tame any overproduction of oil.

Blot Oil Away

Blotting papers are a good way to remove excess oil from your skin during the day. They are inexpensive and can fit easily in your purse.

Avoid Heavy Skincare Products

If you were using a heavy moisturizer in the winter, put it away for the summer months. It may block pores and stimulate breakouts.

Exfoliate

Exfoliation is critical in the summer months as it will slough off the dead skin cells on the surface of the skin so that they can’t trap in oil and debris. Use a gentle product two to three times a week.

Lighten Your Beauty Routine

Piling a lot of products on your skin can result in clogged pores in the summertime. Try using lighter serums and moisturizers, as well as less makeup. When you have more makeup on, it mixes with sweat and oil and can make your skin prone to acne breakouts and irritation.

Mask

Several summer-friendly masks are great for removing excess oil. Try sulfur, charcoal, or mud masks to gently remove skin impurities and leave skin feeling clean and bright. Clarifying masks with gentle hydroxy acids can also help keep your skin looking fresh and clear.

Drink More Water

Water helps hydrate you from the inside out, counteracting the effect that sweating has on your skin. It also helps to eat water-rich fruits and vegetables.

Calming Moisture Hot Weather

Why It’s Important to Moisturize in Hot Weather

It’s a myth that if your skin is oily, you don’t need moisturizer in summer. Moisturizing is just as important in the summer as it is in any season. Indeed, keeping your skin hydrated is essential if you want to combat oiliness.

Here are some more reasons why moisturizer is essential in summer:

  • Harsh sun rays dry out your skin and sap its natural oils. That dries the skin out. Sun rays also accelerate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Air conditioning dries out indoor air, and that dry air steals moisture from your skin.
  • As we sweat, the skin loses more moisture, drying out the skin cells. If you don’t replenish the water and moisture the skin is losing, it will get dry and produce more oil to compensate.
  • Chlorine in swimming pools strips the skin of its natural oils.

What you need is a light moisturizer that will moisturize without clogging your pores.

We recommend our Calming Moisture and Body Repair Lotion. They are both made with ingredients that will not clog your pores and will counteract any inflammation that might lead to acne breakouts. Plus they both have powerful antioxidants that will help protect your skin from the sun and pollution.

Our Calming Moisture is light enough to use as a primer, too, which can help you cut down on the number of products you’re using, giving your skin a break.

Our Rescue & Relief Spray can also give you a great a moisture boost at any time throughout the day. It’s non-comedogenic and oil-free, so it’s perfect for acne-prone skin, and helps soothe and calm redness from too much sun.

Finally, all three products will leave your skin with a natural, glowing sheen that looks great in the summer months!

Hot Girl Summer Hairstyle Guide

by

Who else is still listening to Meghan Thee Stallion’s summer bop on repeat? Since the phrase Hot Girl Summer has entered the pop culture vernacular, we haven’t been able to get that phrase out of our heads nor the idea of basically living your best life during the summertime. What better time to let loose with your friends and sneak into a party or two?

Hot Girl Summer

Her anthem is all about having fun and feeling confident in yourself is what the warmer months are all about (aside from sipping on mimosas and lounging by the pool). So it’s only natural that a discussion was raised at Luxy about what a Hot Girl Summer hairstyle would look like. Is it an ombre sunset inspired hair like Cardi B or a laid back beachy vibe that’s more attuned with what the Kardashians are wearing these days? Whichever look you are leaning more towards we all agreed that there were three main ingredients needed for a bold summer hairstyle. Keep reading to find out how to get #Hot GirlSummer or should we say #HotHairSummer started:

Step 1: Try your dream hair color

Not the color you think looks best on you, but the one color you have been dreaming about but are afraid of trying.

There’s no better time to change your hair color than during the summertime when it’s time to have fun and literally let your hair down.

There’s always the option of going lighter or putting in highlights but also a golden opportunity to try out some fun bold colors that might seem like a bit too much during the colder months.

Dying to go bubblegum pink like Lana Condor or mermaid blue? Take this as a sign to go out of your comfort zone and stop worrying about what the haters might say. If changing up your hair color has been on your mind lately it’s time to seize your moment.

If you aren’t yet ready to commit to dying your hair, coloring your hair extensions is also a great option to test and see how in love you are and whether it’s a temporary crush (like the whole Ariana Grande and Pete Davidson situation) or a long term commitment.

Step 2: Don’t be afraid of volume

There’s no place for limp, lifeless hair during the summertime. It’s time to go big and while we are loving the mermaid waves trend lately, let’s take things up a notch by going a bit bolder with our curls.

To cut down on the heat damage, we’ve been testing out these velcro hair rollers instead. Hair rollers may seem like just a 90s throwback but they are also a great way to get beautiful heatless curls without the additional hair damage.

Our Velcro Hair Roller Set comes with three different sized rollers, plus a set of creaseless clips in a vegan leather bag so you can start to roll like a pro while staying organized. It’s a very affordable way to change up your hair look and it’ll give your hair a nice break from using a curling wand!

Hot Girl Summer - Velcro Rollers

This bold hairstyle can be done with large or mid size hair rollers on damp hair. First add some styling mousse onto your damp hair and let it air dry for a bit. After a few minutes we can start rolling, starting from our ends.

Divide your hair into sections (larger sections if you want a more subtle curl) and start at the bottom of each strand before rolling upwards, securing each one near the crown of the head. Leave in for 10 to 20 minutes before gently unraveling the rollers from your hair. You will be left with beautiful waves (Tip: the smaller the hair roller, the more intense the curl will be!). For a more relaxed look, comb through gently and spritz on some wave spray before heading out with your high heels on.

Step 3: Leave no accessory behind

Half the fun of getting ready is accessorizing. We love a good biker short and choker necklace combo during the summertime. For hair specifically we gravitate towards our trusty hair ties if we are in the mood for a high ponytail or a messy bun.

These Gravity Defying Hair ties grip extremely well and work with all hair types even if your hair is on the thick side. They provide a much needed lift and added oomph to your hot girl summer hairdo.

French Vanilla Claw Clip - Hot Girl Summer

Experiment with high pigtails or a powerful high ponytail to stay cool during the scorching summer heat. You can also layer a Dusk to Dawn scrunchie on top for a major 90s vibe.

To make sure we are looking flawless 24/7, we always make sure to pop a compact mirror into our purse for touch ups. You never know who you will run into.

Step 4: Put together an epic playlist

We’re going to sneak in one final tip here since there’s no better way to make yourself feel like the main character than the perfect summer playlist. We’ve been listening to our favorite summer jams on repeat while we are getting ready and it makes all the difference when you are feeling energized and ready to mingle. Good vibes only.

Hope these hair tips inspire you to go out and have fun during the summer months and make sure to tag us #HotHairSummer on Instagram and TikTok so we can see your look!

Hot spring 2013 hair styles for men

by

Men’s hair styles change less frequently than women’s styles because classic cuts and superior styling create put-together looks that resist the pressures of transitory trends. Frankly, men embrace change more slowly and stick with conservative looks that work for them. You can always look fashionable by getting frequent precision cuts, grooming carefully and taking care of your hair. Noting this disclaimer, the New York Fashion Show and other worldwide fashion venues do suggest certain trends for spring 2013. Foremost among these trends is medium-length hair styles that men can style in dramatic waves or gel into sleek, refined hairstyles for formal occasions.

The Slick Look and Medium Waves

Both of the most popular styles this season depend on precision cuts that make hair look natural and carefree but retain adequate length to create distinctive looks. Hair that is fairly long on top stays healthy, building strength to resist breakage and damage from the weather. This quality doesn’t mean that you need to embrace comb overs, though they can look sexy on younger men who have nothing to hide. You can slick back longish hair on top of the head or comb it over with gels for formal occasions. and style your hair in windblown waves for everyday use. The style gives you versatile choices of hairstyles for any occasion.

Medium waves create messy, windblown looks, but getting the perfect shape for your facial structure requires finding a talented stylist who specializes in precision cuts. Getting the perfect look takes careful blow-drying, extra grooming time and the application of protective hair products. Of course, the upside of this attention is healthier hair that resists damage from the sun, salt water and participating in windy sports.

Wavy Styles Offer Versatile Looks that Work in Most Social Situations

Medium hair on top gets set off by keeping your hair carefully trimmed in the back and on the sides. You can part the hair on the side and create a messy wave that adds height and body, and the technique works for fine, medium, thick or curly hair. Another technique involves parting hair irregularly in the middle and creating gentle waves to either side to create a dramatic effect.

The Slick Comb Over

SpHair style for menring 2013 fashion models and celebrities frequently sported the slick look, but this style can damage the scalp when worn too often.

Oil and grease can accumulate and cut off oxygen to hair roots, but fortunately you can shampoo your hair daily as long as you use the right shampoo formulation for your hair and condition at least once a week. Medium-long hair on top allows you the options of looking impeccably groomed at work, transforming your appearance by spiking your hair with gel for clubbing, and styling the top of your hair in waves for informal outings with friends, business associates and romantic partners. Men’s hairstyles run the gamut from buzz cuts to dramatic spiked mohawks, but the latest trend of wearing hair medium-length on top and neat on the sides offers more options for men who wish to appear fashionable but casual.

Hot 2019 Hairstyles for Men

by

Looking to update your hairstyle in 2019? Start your year off right by trying a new look with your hair. If you don’t know what men’s haircuts are on-trend, keep reading for our top picks for 2019 hairstyles for men.

Curtains

man hairdresser haircut curtains 90s hairstyle hot 2019 hairstyles for men viviscal hair blog

Believe it or not, this floppy, center-parted ’90s hairstyle is making a comeback. The classic Curtains haircut has long bangs worn parted in the middle or to the side with shorter sides. This men’s haircut works best for straight, wavy or moderately curly hair.

If you currently have short hair, you’ll first need to grow out your hair to ear level. Taking Viviscal Man supplements twice daily ensures that your follicles are getting the nutrients they need for hair growth. As your hair grows, visit your hairstylist every 6 to 8 weeks for a trim. Ask to have your hair shaped and texturized so it still looks attractive at it grows out.*

When styling, avoid using hair products with too much hold. Instead, use a serum like Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Densifying Elixir, which adds fullness and shine without sacrificing movement.

Buzzcut

We love this men’s haircut for its ability to add a bit of edginess to any outfit. Plus, it’s easy to do at home (if you have the right equipment of course).

This 2019 update on the buzzcut will have hair slightly longer on top than the sides with a gradual fade.

Bleached Buzz

bleach blonde buzz haircut blue shirt crossed arms man hot 2019 hairstyles for men viviscal hair blog

If you want to try something really trendy, the Bleached Buzz is all the rage right now. Bleach can damage your scalp and the hair, so it’s best to leave this look to the professionals rather than trying to bleach your own hair. The best part? If you don’t love your bleached buzz, you can just grow it out since bleached tips are also on trend right now.

You can also play with the Bleached Buzz look by adding a fun temporary hair color. We’ve recently spotted celebs wearing light blue and bright red buzzcuts. And since temporary hair color causes minimal damage to your hair, it’s safe to experiment with this type of hair color at home.

Curls on Top

curls on top man side view white shirt hot 2019 hairstyles viviscal hair blog

This men’s haircut is an excellent choice for men with curly or textured hair. Ask your barber for a cut that’s short on the sides with longer layers on the top.

If your hair leans more towards the curly side, style with Viviscal Elixir. This hair serum will add extra shine and body that will really emphasize your curls.

If your hair is more textured, try this look with twists rather than curls on top.

The Emperor

caesar haircut cut bangs scissors wet hair hot 2019 hairstyles for men viviscal hair blog

The Caesar haircut is usually associated more with the Roman Empire than with modern times. But this men’s haircut updates the look for 2019. This haircut works best for men with thick, straight, or wavy hair.

Ask your barber for a tight fade on the sides. Leave the top longer and cut with scissors for texture. The bangs should be cut straight across the top of the forehead and then texturized with scissors. To style at home, use a gritty hair wax to muss up the long top and bangs.

The Flow

man glasses brown hair smiling dark background flow long haircut hot 2019 hairstyles for men viviscal hair blog

This men’s haircut has an effortlessly cool, messy vibe. But it’s still polished enough to wear to the office.

For the Flow, you’ll need hair that falls somewhere between ear length and shoulder length. If your hair is currently short, taking Viviscal Man for several months will help to promote hair growth by supplying your hair follicles with needed nutrition. As your hair grows, visit your barber every 6 to 8 weeks for a trim.*

The Flow hairstyle looks best with a little natural grit and texture, so keep shampooing to a minimum. Twice per week will work best. Instead, rinse hair daily with water and then condition with Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Densifying Conditioner. Allow hair to air dry to bring out your natural texture. If needed, warm up a small amount of pomade between your fingers, then run your fingers through your hair to push it back.

How will you style your hair in 2019? Let us know in the comments!

How to Look Polished (Even When It's Hot!) click through for moreWe have officially entered the dog days of summer here in New York City! I am fully aware of the many adventures that still await during these last few weeks. My days were packed, cramming in whatever activity I had all but forgotten, until these heavy and muggy last few weeks of summer  arrived.

There’s just so much that I want to see and experience, and there is so little time to fuss on makeup these days. Why should I? The makeup will probably just melt off at some point or another.

I pride myself on many things, being one that rocks a makeup-less face with confidence is not one. Maybe one day I’ll get there, but not today. I much prefer an overall pulled together, light makeup face, despite the heat. Over the summer, I’ve developed a foolproof routine that pulls me together just enough, makes me feel pretty, doesn’t sweat off (and if it did, I wouldn’t look drastically different), and takes just three minutes from start to finish.

Here’s how to look polished with just a few easy tips!

How to Look Polished (Even When It's Hot!) click through for more The summer sun, mixed with working out and sweat and more sun, has caused my face to break out a bit. The tip of my nose, between my brows, and a bit of my cheekbones, to be specific. Every morning after rinsing my face, I use a spin brush and Thayers Lavender and Aloe Witch Hazel to clear it up. It leaves my face feeling fresh and the perfect, clean palette for a little makeup. If I was to just go out without makeup, I would do that morning step and leave my face like the picture above.

How to Look Polished (Even When It's Hot!) click through for more Here are a few products I use to create a easy summer glow:

-Thayers Lavender Witch Hazel
-Johnson’s Baby Oil
-Nars Concealer
-EOS chapstick
-a gold eye shadow for the inner corner
-a bronzer for cheeks (I skip the bronzer and go straight for my favorite shimmery eyeshadow. You can do this too if you have a shade you already love.)
-liquid eyeliner
-a brush for applying your eye makeup

How to Look Polished (Even When It's Hot!) click through for more After I rinse my face with the witch hazel and spin brush, I pull out my witch hazel once again to create a highlight for my cheekbones. On a piece of folded tissue paper, or a small makeup sponge, I apply a few drops of witch hazel. After you apply your drops, apply a drop of baby oil. Yes, baby oil! Blended with the toner, it creates a smooth shine that gives you an off-the-beach glow.

How to Look Polished (Even When It's Hot!) click through for more After applying my cheekbone glow, I apply my concealer. I think it’s far too easy to overdo the concealer part. I try to only put it halfway under my eye, and I always rub it in with my index finger. It helps keep your face looking more natural.

How to Look Polished (Even When It's Hot!) click through for more I feel like eyeliner and a bit of eyeshadow in the inner corner is essential to getting the pulled together part of this makeup look. It’s not too much. Just enough. I tend to do a cat eye on days like this simply because I won’t be wearing lipstick. But if I’m wearing lipstick, I’ll skip the cat eye and just do the eyeliner.

How to Look Polished (Even When It's Hot!) click through for more I like to use my eyeshadow as a bronzer simply because it’s light and it’s the shade that looks best with my skin. But if you have a color that works, and it’s an actual bronzer…go for it! Since you already put that toner and oil on as a “glow,” you don’t need to apply a lot. I put on just enough for a slight sparkle, nothing too obvious. I also apply a little to the tip of my nose and my chin.

Et voila! It’s airy and it’s bright. Perfect for summer’s heat!

How to Look Polished (Even When It's Hot!) click through for more I recommend wiping off your makeup at night with makeup remover and your Thayers. I hope you guys enjoy the rest of your exciting summer! xx. LaTonya

When the weather is hot and humid, it seems like our regular hairstyles just don’t hold up. Once the humidity gets above a certain number, blowouts start to frizz and curls start to droop. So what can you do? Try one of these hairstyles for hot weather! These humid hairstyles either embrace the changes humidity brings to our hair, or uses sneaky styling techniques to keep frizz at bay. Keep reading for the best hairstyles for hot weather!

Our 5 Favorite Hairstyles for Hot Weather

Hairstyles for Hot Weather

  1. Beachy Waves

Do you have naturally wavy hair? This humid hairstyle is for you. Usually women with naturally wavy hair either straighten or curl their hair to create a more polished look. However, hot temperatures and high humidity can easily erase all the hard work you put into your hairstyle, leaving you with frizzy and droopy locks. Not what you want!

So instead, we suggest embracing your natural hair texture by following these steps:

    • Start by washing your hair with Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Densifying Shampoo.
    • Apply Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Densifying Conditioner throughout your hair. But don’t rinse it out just yet! Let the conditioner sit in your hair for several minutes while it hydrates and softens your hair.
    • Next, flip your head over and use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to detangle your hair. Then rinse all the conditioner out of your hair.
    • While hair is still sopping wet, apply a dime-size amount of Viviscal Gorgeous Growth Densifying Elixir to your hair to add body. Then apply hair gel throughout your hair and scrunch in sections.
    • Flip your head over and wrap your hair in an old t-shirt to soak up excess moisture. After 30 to 60 minutes, remove the t-shirt and let your hair air dry. Hint: avoid touching your hair while it dries to prevent frizz!
    • Once hair is completely dry, gently scrunch your hair with your fingers to eliminate any crunchiness from the gel. And voila! Your natural waves are enhanced, sans frizz!

We love this humid hairstyle because it’s also a great hot weather hairstyle for short hair. Beachy waves work well on hair of all lengths, and it’s great for both wavy and curly hair.

Plus, your waves will last for several days without much maintenance. To refresh your waves, just apply a bit of water to your hair and scrunch.

2. Sleek Low Bun

A sleek low bun is always a good hairstyle for hot days. A sleek hair bun is casual enough to wear to the pool, but you can also dress it up with some dangly earrings for a night out.

After styling your bun, use a comb to remove any bumps for a smooth, sleek look. Then spray your hair with dry oil to add shine, and finish with hairspray for all-day hold. If you have frizzy hair, you can also tame flyaways with a little bit of hair gel.

3. Messy Bun with Flowers

Smooth and sleek not your thing? Try this hairstyle for hot weather. To get the look, just tie your hair into a messy high bun or top knot. Then use a bobby pin to clip a decorative fresh flower into place. Don’t have any fresh flowers on hand? No worries. A silk flower works just as well (and lasts longer)!

humid hairstyles

4. High Ponytail with Bandana

The bandana in this hairstyle looks cute, but it’s also performing a not-so-cute function: absorbing sweat! Seriously, during the dog days of summer, nothing is worse than getting sweat in your eyes, right? Adding a little bandana to your ‘do is a stylish way to prevent this from happening. That’s why this is one of our favorite hairstyles for hot days!

5. Side Braid

Everyone knows that a simple braid is an ideal hairstyle for hot weather. But if you’re looking for something a little different, you can change up a simple braid by pulling it to the side.

If your braid isn’t as thick as you’d like it to be, try Viviscal Hair Growth Supplements. Viviscal is clinically proven proven to nourish thinning hair and promote existing hair growth*. In clinical studies, women saw a 32% increase in the number of terminal hairs and a nearly 40% decrease in hair shedding in just 3 months+. Those are some serious results!

Viviscal works by nourishing your hair from the inside out with a combination of key vitamins and minerals for hair growth plus AminoMarTM, a proprietary marine protein complex found exclusively in Viviscal supplements*. Just two pills per day can lead to a thicker braid in as little as 3 months. Woo!
