Over time I’ve updated a number of products I use and love and so in March 2021 I decided to update this post to reflect what I am currently loving and using.

I wear makeup most days, usually skipping one or two days a week (usually when I’m pressed for time, ha) and over the years I’ve swapped out a lot of the makeup I use for more natural brands. I may still have a few items that don’t fall under the umbrella of “natural” makeup, but for the most part my everyday makeup routine is pretty clean. But even if you couldn’t care less about natural products everything I use also feels (at least to me, and with my skin type) high performing and high quality.

Above is everything in my makeup bag, although I don’t use all of this every day. I feel like most people (who wear and like makeup) have at least a few shades or lipstick or blush that you cycle through depending what you are wearing or what you’re in the mood for that day.

Foundations & Concealers-

I have two liquid foundations I love. I tend to use Bare Minerals BarePro in Aspen 04 in the colder months and ILIA Skin Tint in Tulum in the warmer months. I love that both contain a good amount of SPF (although I still wear sunscreen under my makeup if I am going anywhere at all), but the ILIA Skin Tint is a lighter consistency so it just feels better during the warmer season to me.

I love W3ll People Bio Correct in Ivory for a very full coverage concealer, like if I am covering up a blemish or red spot. And I also like this ILIA concealer stick—I tend to use it more like a highlighter or for under my eyes mainly.

Also pictured is ILIA Serum Concealer in Arrowroot, which I use at the very end to kind of set my makeup, or I’ll brush some on if I want to avoid looking shiny.

Eye Makeup-

I have eyelash extensions that I get refilled once a month. For this reason, I don’t really wear eyeliner or mascara. I love my eyelash extensions (I go to Abby at Foxie Lash in Springfield, Missouri) and to me they are worth the time and expense to keep them up. It’s my #1 treat to myself. 🙂

For eyeshadow, I have the Lawless The Little One Palette. I use ILIA Essential Brow in Medium Brown for my brows. And I also wanted to mention this HAN eyeshadow in Celebrate as I love it for not only my inner eyes, but also I use it as a highlighter on my cheekbones or the bridge of my nose.

Blush & Bronzer-

I only own one bronzer, I love it. It’s ILIA Bronzing Powder in Drawn In.

I have a few different blushes that I use and love that are slightly different shades/looks. I use Rejuva Minerals Baked Blush in Cranfusion for a basic, everyday pressed powder option. I like the ILIA Multi-Stick in At Last for cheeks and lips. I also like Bloomeffects Tulip Tint for both cheeks and lips. When I use either of those last two options it’s a little more of a dewy look.

Lipsticks and Glosses-

I love a matte lip, so most of the lip products I own fall into that category. Love BITE Lip Crayons (the two colors I have are Glacé and Nonino). I also love these Shade M Matte Liquid Lipsticks—the colors I have are Lila and Secrets. I own one very pink, bold lipstick from 100% Pure in Marrakesh, which is for special moments. Ha. And, I love HAN Lipgloss on its own for a softer look, or layered over one of my other lip products.

Thanks for letting me share! Check out Elsie’s clean makeup favorites for more product recommendations! xo. Emma

This blog post has become one of my favorites to write every season. There are some makeup trends that change slowly over time (thin eyebrows to thick), some we see every year (smoky eyes? Bold lips?), and then there are a few variations on the trends that are unique to each season. These are usually a bit wild and creative, but so inspiring! So how do we take these inspirational looks and turn them into something flattering that we can wear in our every day lives? Keep reading for three trends that hit the runways for fall 2014, and of course our take on how to incorporate the look (albeit a toned down version) into your daily makeup routine. Not your average smoky eye Christian Dior showcased a few very bold smoky eye looks on the runway this season and we love this khaki, metallic look.

Kinsey's Everyday Styling RoutineIt’s time for round four of Everyday Styling with Kinsey. Click here to see the rest- 1+2+3.

1 - concealer and loose powder Growing up, my freckles were my biggest insecurity. I couldn’t wait till I was old enough to wear makeup and cover them up. But in high school I realized if I’m going to have these freckles forever, I might as well learn to love them! Since then, I started choosing earth tones to highlight my darker features and compliment my millions of freckles.

I start off my makeup routine with a small amount of foundation on any blemishes and underneath my eyes. I use Rimmel London Clean Finish 230 Warm Ivory. I then cover my t-zone with loose powder by CoverGirl

. If there is one makeup step I never skip, it’s powder. I have naturally oily skin, so I try and keep a loose powder handy at all times. 2 - bronzer Next, I apply bronzer to my face, with an extra brush or two on my cheek bones. I switch up my bronzer quite frequently, but my favorite is bareMinerals Warmth All Over3- eyeshadowI start off my eye makeup by first applying eye shadow. I’m an eye shadow fanatic, so I usually wear two or three shades at a time. I first apply a dark, copper color to my lid, then blend it up to a gold shade. Here I’m wearing Maybelline Eyeshadow in Golden Halo and Maybelline Eyeshadow in Copper Craze.4 eye linerI’m all about the cat eye look. I use Maybelline Waterproof Liquid Liner in black. Making sure I have a waterproof liner is really important to me during a photo shoot because I’m constantly squinting and looking through the view finder on my camera so my eyes tend to water a lot.  5 - mascara To finish off my eyes I use an eyelash curler and CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume Mascara7 - brows Next, I lightly pencil in my brows. My brows are really dark, so I use a shade lighter so that they don’t look too bold once I’m finished. 8 - chapstickThe last step to my makeup routine is a good dose of chapstick.  I wear Nivea Lip Balm, A Kiss of Moisture and occasionally A Kiss of Shimmer when my outfit has a little pink or violet in it. I’ve tried out lipstick and it’s just not for me. Either that or I have yet to find my perfect shade. Until that day, I’ll stick with my good ole chapstick.9 - teasing hairI have fine hair, so I always tease my roots a bit before styling.9 - teasing hairYou can find my hair routine here. When I’m not sporting the mermaid curls or beach waves I’ve usually put my locks into a top knot. This has been my favorite during the summer heat. Kinsey's Everyday Styling RoutineKinsey's Everyday Styling RoutineKinsey's Everyday Styling RoutineThanks so much for sharing your styling routine, Kinsey! It’s been years since I shared my makeup routine and a LOT has changed. I have found better quality products for my skin and for the environment and I’ve found things that perform much, much better. The biggest benefit I have experienced from switching to (90%) natural beauty is that my skin is healthier. A lot of it has to do with my skincare (which I will share another day) but I do believe that putting good ingredients on your skin makes a difference both in the long term AND the short term.

That said, I don’t believe that non-toxic beauty is all or nothing. I took my time replacing items and finding favorites. And you’ll see in this post that I still use a few conventional products that I haven’t been able to replace. It’s important to me to share that my routine isn’t perfectly non-toxic, but still it is SO much better than it was two years ago. I think it’s easier to go natural with skincare than it is with makeup. Makeup took more time, more trial and error for me. But still, everything I am sharing here is something I have been impressed by and that I use often—most of these items I have bought multiple times over the past few years.

I hope this goes without saying, but this is zero percent sponsored. I spent years finding the best of the best, and am still discovering … that’s why it took me so long to write this post!

Finding a foundation I loved wasn’t quick and easy for me. I tried a lot and this is by FAR the best option I have found. I will use this a long time.

In my everyday life, I use the primer and foundation, but I don’t worry about concealer. I only use concealer on photo days (maybe once a week).

For everyday, I use the smart primer (it makes my skin much more smooth for the concealer and I love that it is filled with great, healthy ingredients). Then I use the Crunchi liquid foundation. I do use their flat top foundation brush as well; it really helps to get a completely even application.

Since buying makeup online can be a real pain in the a$$, I love having an option to try a foundation sample card. I highly recommend that if you think you might be in between two colors.

For photo days, I wear concealer around my eyes, down the front of my nose and on my chin. I put this on before foundation. I use Kat Von D Lock It Concealer. I will be trying to update this with a green product, but in the meantime, it performs super well. Since I don’t use it as often, it’s not at the top of my priority list.

Now let’s talk about brows. I am not one of those people #blessed with enormous, full eyebrows. In fact, I often refer to my brows as a “comb over” (haha)! They have big bald spots in the center.

For a quick everyday solution, I like Glossier’s boy brow. It is quick, easy to apply and looks natural and not too heavy.

For photos, a date night or a more dramatic brow, I like to use defining wax by EcoBrow (the color I use is Rita). This product lasts forever and works so well. I use a small brush to apply it. I just realized this is probably the wrong brush for brows—someone feel free to correct me (haha). But it gets the job done!

There is a night and day difference in my brows before and after I line them.

Now, you guys might know that some of the time I wear eyelash extension and I am a HUGE fan. I am currently taking a break from them, but if I had the chance I would wear them full-time. I hate going to the appointments, but I love how simple they make your everyday life.

When I am not wearing lashes I fully skip eye makeup on days I am not in photos (I’ve been giving my eyes a break a lot because I think I am developing eye allergies since moving to Tennessee). I know everyone is different. I have a lot of friends who have to wear makeup everyday, even to go to the grocery store. But growing up, my mom hardly ever wore makeup, and so I’ve always had a lot of days where I just skip the whole thing.

Anyway …

I am a big fan of false lashes. My natural lashes are not amazing and I prefer a dramatic look for my lashes, so I use falsies a lot. I will say that the more you use them, the faster and easier they become to apply. I use the full strips (these are fastest to apply, but they don’t stay put as long), the trios (mix two sizes, I mix medium and long) which are my personal fave and occasionally I will use the individuals (which take longer to apply, but last the longest). I love false lashes!!! If you have dark lashes or use dark eyeliner, always buy dark glue instead of white!

Lash glue can have some nasty ingredients in it. The glue I am currently using is still not perfect, but better. If anyone has suggestions, I am all ears!

For eyeliner, I love Kat Von D Tattoo liner and ink liner. I will probably replace them someday, but in the meantime there is nothing I have found that even comes close in terms of performance. This is some good cat-eye-liner!

For mascara I use, Lily Lolo. It’s the best non-toxic mascara out there. And honestly, I think it stands on its own against conventional mascara, which is typically one of the worst products at the drugstore.

Finding natural options for eyeshadow is easy peasy! I love Lily Lolo’s palettes. I also love 100% Pure. I have this palette— it’s fruit pigmented and filled with amazing ingredients … just look at the the list! I use this palette for eyes and cheeks.

Speaking of cheeks …

For contouring, I like this Lily Lolo contour duo. I don’t do a ton of contouring, but a little bit under the cheek bones is so pretty!

My favorite blush is from Antonym Cosmetics (it’s so peachy and pretty!).

For a quick cheek color, I am obsessed with this tint stick in Peach Glow. I put it on the apples of my cheeks when smiling!

For a natural look, (on days I am wearing minimal makeup) I love this RMS compact. It has a pretty peachy color for lips and cheeks, and two different highlighters I use on my cheekbones and eyes.

And last, but not least—lips!

My go-to lip moisturizer is Glossier’s balm.com in mint. I keep one in my bag, by my bed, and I use it to prime my lips before putting on lipstick.

Another appearance by this RMS compact. I really love it and it’s so versatile.

For lip color, the best thing I have found so far is 100% Pure Lip Caramel. It has a LOT of pigment and really works. They are SO pretty.

OK, well the last thing I will share is a quick before/after I took this morning on my phone (this has no editing whatsoever!)

This makeup application took me about 15 minutes and is about the extent of what I do (minus bigger lashes sometimes). I used mascara here, since I figured you already know what my face looks like with false eyelashes. Also, I am wearing this lip gloss in this look.

If you have any questions about the products, or about non-toxic beauty in general OR (my favorite) product suggestions, I’d love to chat with you in the comments!

You can read about my skincare routine here. xx – Elsie

Emma's everyday styling routineElsie and I get asked every now and then about our everyday styling routines. I’ll be the first to admit that I am no makeup expert. But I love trying new products and techniques and over the years I have developed an everyday makeup and hair routine that I am comfortable with and that I feel works best with my features. Today I thought it would be fun to share my routine, along with all the real products I use.

Let's get startedIn the morning I wash my face and apply a moisturizer with SPF 15. I have gotten in the habit of wearing a little sunscreen everyday in the hopes that one day my skin will look as good as my mother’s. Dream big, I say.

Foundation + ConcealerI apply concealer to my under eye circle areas and if I have a blemish I usually blot on a little concealer to that as well. (Side note: When is this blemish thing going to be over?! I thought by my mid/late 20s I’d be done with all that.) I am currently using CoverGirl Invisible Concealer

in Fair. I then apply foundation to my entire face and try to blend it on my jaw line and neck. Currently using NYC Liquid foundation. The NYC makeup brand is super inexpensive so it suits my thrifty heart.

BronzerBronzer With foundation and bronzerI then brush bronzer just below my cheekbones. They say matte is best but I tend to like a little sparkle in my bronzer, it’s the 90’s child in me. I’m currently using Jane shimmering bronzer.

BlushNext, I apply a touch of blush to just above my cheekbones. I read once that this makes you look less tired. Sold. I’ve been doing it ever since. For blush I’m currently using Wet n Wild in heather silk.

EyelinerOn to the eyes: I actually do wear eyeliner almost every day. I line the outer two-thirds of my upper lids and just dot in a little bit on my outer lower lids. For a special night I sometimes add a lot more liner and a tiny cat-eye effect. My current eyeliner is Bonne Bell Eye Style Precise Eyeliner

in Basic Black.

EyeshadowBenefit Eyeshadow

For eyeshadow I like use at least three neutral tones. I usually buy one of those multi-packs of eyeshadow so everything goes well together; currently using Benefit Cosmetics Big Beautiful Eyes Palette. I brush a tiny bit of darkest brown into the outer edges of my lids and blend toward the center. Next, I add the second darkest shade to the center of my lid and blend. Last, I brush on the lightest shade from the inner corners and blend toward the center. It’s a lot of blending but I’ve found this helps to make the shadow look a little more natural.

MascaraMascaraMascara. You gotta have mascara. Even on days I’m giving my face a rest from make up I usually still wear mascara and lip gloss. I’m currently loving Rimmel Scandaleys Mascara in Extreme Black.

LipstickLipstickNow I add a little lipstick. I tend to wear a lot of darker neutrals/browns for everyday wear. I get adventurous now and again with reds and pinks but most days I play it safe with a bronze brown lipstick. I’m currently loving NYC Lipstick in Caramel.

Finish with powderLast I add a bit of powder to set my look and keep things matte. I really love L’Oreal Paris True Match Powder

in soft ivory (this also has SPF 19, double win!). I have oily skin so powder is nice, you don’t want too much sheen. I press my lips together as I powder around my lips and chin. I’ve found that this helps my lipstick stay in place longer.

Finished MakeupCurlsNow let’s talk hair. I have straight, limp, lazy hair. That’s the card I was dealt in life. And since I have oily skin, my hair, especially around my hairline, gets greasy looking fast. To combat this tragedy I use dry shampoo. I LOVE my dry shampoo. I don’t know what I ever did without it. My favorite brand is Not Your Mother’s Dry Shampoo

. Simply spray a little in, brush out and boom- clean looking hair. Most days I curl the ends of my hair and spray in place. I also like to rock a braided crown now and again, especially if it’s rainy out.

Emma's Finished LookEmma's Styling RoutineI hope you’ve enjoyed seeing my everyday styling routine. I tried to add links to products I could find online, or very similar products. Thanks for letting me get a little girlie with you. Elsie will be sharing her everyday styling routine in the near future as well. xo. Emma

Aimee's Everyday Styling Routine2Well, hello there! Aimee here, and I am so excited to be able to share my daily makeup routine with you guys. Now, I will have to say I’m not some kind of makeup guru or anything, but I do dabble in some makeup styling that is great for just my everyday. Aimee DurhamWhen I wake up in the mornings I usually start my skin care routine. It’s crucial to have a good base to be able to apply makeup to. I use an exfoliating facial sponge that you can find at most any drugstore and the 3-in-One Step cleanser by Vichy. Exfoliating is a very important step for me because of some of the makeup I use.  I also use their Vichy Vichy Aqualia Thermal Light Fortifying & Soothing 24Hr Hydrating Care

I then apply my foundation, and this is where the exfoliating comes in. I use Etude House Precious Mineral Sun BB Cream

with SPF 50 (a Korean brand). If you have never used BB cream you should give it a try. I prefer the Korean brands, because they match my skin tone better, but many American brands have their versions now as well. BB cream is a combination of SPF, moisturizer, a primer and a foundation. I swear by it, but you must exfoliate well, because it has a tendency to show dead skin. I then seal everything with the Etude House BB Magic Mist and Mineral Wear talc—free correcting powder by Physicians Formula. Aimee's eyelinerI then use a bronzer under my cheek bones.  Ada Cosmetics has a nice loose bronzer that I use in Golden. I then do the suck-in-cheek thing and put blush right on my check bones, I use contouring blush by Covergirl in Refined Rose3I then use a contouring (I’m all about that) eye shadow by Almay called Intense i-color. It goes by your eye color and has three shades to use on your lid, crease, and brow bone. It takes all of the guess work out of it. I brush a little of the lightest brow bone color in the corner of my eye as well. It opens them up and makes them pop (or at least that’s what I’ve heard the pros say). I line my eyes with Eyeko London Skinny liquid eyeliner in Olive.

I then use CoverGirl Lash Blast Volume Blasting Mascara

. I like how the brush is shaped, and it really coats my top and bottom lashes without a lot of clumps.4For everyday I usually use a lip gloss instead of any lipstick, and right now I am using Revlon Colorburst Lipgloss in Sunset Peach and Dandelion by Benefit. Peach really goes well on darker skin tones.  Aimee's lip gloss7And that’s it for my everyday look! It’s clean and natural and that’s what I aim for. I also wanted to add how I take everything up a notch to transform the look from day the night. I usually just make the crease in my eye shadow a little more smokey and add a lip tint or lip stick. Here I am using Tangerine in the Sephora + Pantone Universe line, but I am also crazy about Tony Moly lip tint in Red Apple. Aimee's favorite lip tintWhen it comes to my hair I am not ashamed to say that I use extensions. In my line of work, broadcast journalism, it is not industry standard to have really long hair, so I use the same method as what was previously featured on the blog and you can see it here. The one thing I would add is that I use extensions with a coarser hair texture to match my natural hair. I don’t go with the bone straight hair because, my hair is naturally curly and it looks more natural that way.9Thanks for letting me share my everyday styling routine! xo. Aimee

Elsie's Everyday Styling RoutineIt’s my turn to share my everyday styling routine! Ready, set, go…I like to keep it simpleI’m not a fan of owning tons of makeup. This past year I cleaned out my collection, keeping only essential items that I use every day. Now everything I need easily fits into my little travel bag. My routine consists of products and techniques that I have found over time. I’m 30 years old, and I think that my 15-year-old self would laugh at how simple my routine has become. When I was that age, I woke up SO EARLY before school and spent silly amounts of time on my fussy hair and makeup routine. Now I can be ready in 30 minutes, easy! So I guess the jokes on you, 15-year-old Elsie. 🙂Let's beginEvery morning I wash my face and put on moisturizer. Then I put on foundation and a little concealer for my dark eye circles. I like Neutrogena Healthy Skin Liquid Makeup

and MAKE UP FOR EVER Lift Concealer. The concealer is the best I’ve ever found. I’ve used it for years and recommend it to all my friends.SunscreenI wish I started moisturizing and wearing SPF products at a younger age. Moisturizing is so important for healthy looking skin. My favorite is this Mario Badescu lotion. I use it every day along with my foundation, which has SPF 20. One reason I didn’t use it when I was younger was because I tried some brands that stung my sensitive skin and eyes. If that’s you, keep trying to find a brand that works for your skin type. It’s worth the time and money, I promise. 🙂EyeshadowMy eyeshadow routine is super simple. I like to highlight under my eyebrows and on my eyelids with light shadow, and I add a little bit of brown shadow in the crease. I like Neutrogena Nourishing Eye Quad.EyelinerI love eyeliner. When I was in high school I wore a terrifying amount of eyeliner all the way around my eyes. I later learned that less is more in that department. Now I only wear a line on my top lids with a slight cat eye. No eyeliner on the bottom. I like liquid eye pencils. My favorite is actually e.l.f. Essential Waterproof Eyeliner Pen ($1 at Target!). I also like L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Mistake-Proof Marker Eyeliner and Almay Liquid Eyeliner when I want to do a super defined cat eye, mostly for photo shoots.

After eyeliner I put on mascara. I use about 5 applications, allowing a little dry time between each one. My favorite brand is L’Oreal Paris Voluminous Mascara. My mom has always worn this brand, so I got this one form her. I’ve tried others throughout the years, but this is the best I’ve found for plumping up my wimpy lashes.Brow linerBrows are something I struggled with for a long time. When I was younger I over plucked and had practically invisible eyebrows… yikes! These days I pluck as little as possible. I also line my brows to give them definition, since they are not very prominent. I love Benefit Cosmetics Brow Zings

. I’m so glad women are embracing fuller eyebrows these days.Blush + bronzerNext, blush and bronzer! I use Neutrogena Healthy Skin Custom Glow Blush & Bronzer in Posie Glow. Since I have very pale skin, I try not to overdo the bronzer and I use a tiny bit all over my face and neck. I use pink or peach blush at the very top of my cheekbones. I also use a highlighter sometimes, I use Shimmer Waves Blush from The Body Shop.LipstickI’m not the best with lipstick. No matter what I do it wears off super quickly. For this reason I don’t usually wear super bright colors. On an average day I wear tinted chapstick (love Burt’s Bees!) or my favorite subtle color, Clinique Raspberry Rush.Done! All done! On rushed days I skip the eyeliner and lipstick. 🙂Hair essentialsNext up, hair! My daily routine is super simple. All I need is a comb and a flat iron to style it each day. 🙂 My hair used to take forever to blow dry. My stylist recommended Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Styling Treatment Oil and it has helped SO much. I use it after every shower. I also use this spray to give my hair a little shine.Everyday Hair Routine1. I like to backcomb (tease) my roots to give my hair a little bit more body. I always tease lower (hidden) layers, so the top of my hair doesn’t look ratty. 2-4. My stylist taught me to curl the bottom of my hair using my flat iron. I love the subtle waves and the fact that I never need a curling iron. I currently use the Remington Wet 2 Strait flat iron. I bought it on a business trip when my bag was missing for a couple days. It’s the best (inexpensive) iron I’ve ever owned. I run my fingers through the curls to loosen them up, so they look more natural. I don’t normally use hairspray because I only wash my hair every 2-4 days and I feel that it stays shinier with less product. That’s it! Easy peasy.

When I wear my hair up, which is often, I usually go for easy braided styles. A few of my favorites are maiden braids, knots and a messy top knot. Elsie's Everyday Styling Routine Elsie's Everyday Styling Routine I hope you enjoyed a peek at my everyday routine! It was fun to share. xo. Elsie
