Types of hair rollers

Foam rollers

Great for all hair types, this type of hair roller is best used to help create volume or loose waves. Foam rollers can be applied to dry hair and kept on overnight. To help prevent pulling, avoid securing the roller too close to your hair line and keep it loose. In the morning, remove the rollers and gently brush through your hair, or simply use your fingers to comb through.

Steam rollers

Using a lower heat setting than curling wands, steam rollers can help create a variety of curl patterns depending on how you apply them. For more of a curl, apply at the end of your hair and roll towards your scalp. To get more of a wave, apply the steam roller a few inches away from your roots and wrap your hair around the roller which helps to create volume. No matter how you apply this type of hair roller, leave it in for about 20 minutes or until the rollers cool. Remove rollers and enjoy and bouncy, full hair look.

Velcro rollers

Another versatile hair roller that spans all ages, we might just love the Velcro hair roller the best. The Velcro hair roller can easily create loose curls or tight ringlets, depending on the size of the Velcro roller and how you use it.

Velcro hair rollers are great for natural hair and hair extensions because it is a heatless hair care tool, making it safe for natural hair and hair extensions.

While holding your hair securely straight, roll the ends of your hair around the roller to grip the Velcro and get it to stick. At Luxy Hair, we love styling tools that are safe for natural hair and hair extensions, especially ones that deliver style results, so we created our own Volumizing Velcro Roller Set. Luxy’s Velcro Roller Set comes with 18 self-gripping Velcro hair rollers in 3 different sizes; small, medium, and large so no matter what your hair type, or hair length you can achieve curls as tight, loose, or voluminous as you want. Our hair roller set also comes with 9 tortoise print creaseless clips to help secure the rollers where you need it. The creaseless clips can be used for all your styling needs and can even be worn on their own because we love a good hair accessory moment.

The Velcro rollers and clips come in a vegan leather pouch so you can take your rollers with you wherever you need them – hello vacation packing without awkward cords and styling tools.

The small Luxy Velcro rollers are great for shorter hair or thin hair. They are also great for creating tighter curls or ringlets. Our medium Velcro rollers are great for any length of hair and can help create curls or waves depending on how you apply them. For those with long or thick hair, the large Velcro rollers will make styling a breeze. Use the tortoise print creaseless clips to help secure thicker hair to the rollers.

Similar to Velcro hair rollers, flexirods are made to be used without the assistance of any other tool. Simply twirl or wrap your hair around the cushioned, flexible rod which easily bends the way you want it too. This type of hair roller is best to achieve ringlets or tight curls. For girls with tight curly or kinky hair, flexirods can also be applied to stretch or widen the curl.

For best results, experts recommend applying flexirods to damp hair and a bit of styling product. Depending on how much time you have, you can let your hair air dry or use a blowdryer on a low heat setting to dry the hair. When ready, remove the rods and use your fingers to part the curls.

Jumbo rollers

Usually heated, jumbo rollers are great for thick and long hair. These rollers help to achieve voluminous waves for that red carpet, vampy look. With the jumbo rollers, you can create seamless curls or waves that flow fluidly in the same direction (think opposite of the beachy wave). By applying the rollers in the same direction, you will get an all-over type of volume and movement for a sleek style.

While we may not say adieu to our curling irons forever, most hair rollers are an effective and no-heat alternative to get many of the same hairstyles. If you haven’t tried styling with hair rollers yet, what’s stopping you? If you have, let us know which ones you use and how it works for you. Like fashion, what’s old becomes new again in hair styling, with so many sizes and options, hair rollers have definitely upgraded and offer versatile style pay-off.

Wet Styling | Hair care & Advice

Ever wondered how to pull off wet styling your hair? If this is a question you’ve been asking yourself, this one is for you. Let’s go through the nitty-gritty of wet styling, its benefits, and how you can wet style straight, wavy, kinky, and curly hair like a pro.

What is Wet Styling?

What is wet styling? According to Evan Joseph, a professional hairstylist, wet hair styling is the process in which hair products are applied on dripping wet hair, after which excess water is squeezed out of the hair.

A common term used to refer to wet styling is wash and set. Wet styling is quite popular due to how convenient and versatile it is. You can rock it in a simple outing with friends and family or at an elegant event.

Wet Styling vs Damp Styling

Wet styling is not the same as damp styling although both of them are usually confused with each other. The main difference is that while wet styling is done when the hair is wet, damp styling is done on damp hair. That is, for damp styling, the water is squeezed out of the hair before styling or applying hair products.

Benefits of Wet Styling

There are many benefits associated with wet styling. Let’s take a look at a few of them.

1. Healthy-looking hair

Wet styling makes the hair look smooth and shiny. In addition, if your hair is damaged or fragile, wet styling will help you restore it to a healthy state.

2. Easy to Style

Hair is easier to style while wet, especially for curly and kinky hair types. The wetness reduces tangles and makes it easier to style your hair into your preferred hairstyle. You’ll also find that with wet styling, your hairstyle stays intact throughout the day.

3. Saves on Time

Wet styling saves on time since you don’t need to wait for the hair to dry before styling it. This makes it perfect for days when you’re short on time and still need to look put together for video calls or nights out.

4. Keeps the Hair Hydrated

In wet styling, hair products are applied to the hair when it’s still dripping wet. As a result, the hair stays hydrated thus being less susceptible to brittleness, and frizz. It is also a great way to prevent dry hair.

5. Suitable for all Hair Types

The beauty of wet hairstyling is that it works on all hair types. Whether you have straight, curly, wavy, or coily hair, you can pull it off. Although wet styling looks different on the various hair types, it has the same amazing benefits.

Wet Styling

Wet Styling on Different Hair Types

There are four main hair types from type 1 to 4. Each hair type is unique and requires special care. Knowing the right way to take care of your hair is an important step towards loving your hair type.

Wet styling is a process that can be applied to all hair types but is rather popular amongst women with naturally curly or wavy hair.

Wet hair styling for type 1 hair – Straight/Fine hair

Straight hair, otherwise known as fine or thin hair is a hair type that lies straight on the scalp. It is soft, shiny, most times oily, and has a poor tendency of holding curls. When it comes to wet styling, straight hair benefits immensely from the frizz-fighting benefits.

Wet styling type one hair is a straightforward process. The first step is to apply oil or serum to your wet hair. This reduces hair damage. Next, apply alcohol-free mousse from the root of the hair to the tip. Finally, squeeze out the excess water. You can leave your hair like that if you want to achieve a straight look.

However, if you want to create gentle curls, divide your hair into four equal sections, braid each of them and tie each in a bun. The tighter you make the braid, the stronger the wave will be. Untie each bun and separate the waves once your hair is dry. You now have gentle curls without much effort.

For low waves with smooth roots, separate your hair into two partitions and twist each partition to the side. Keep twisting your hair till you reach the tip. Next, spin each twist into a low bun and secure it with an elastic band. Squeeze out excess water for easy drying. Unravel each bun and separate the waves when your hair is dry.

To give more volume to your wet hairstyle, add some hair extensions. They are easy to install and are available in a variety of colors that will blend in with your hair. You can even get yourself an application kit to make adding extensions more seamless.

Wet Styling

Wet Hair Styling for type 2 hair

When it comes to wavy hair, you need to be more careful. Wavy hair has some similarities to straight hair but has a loose S-shape towards its tip. You will need to focus on forming your desired texture while avoiding frizz.

Amy Abramite, a hairstylist and the creative director at Maxine Salon in Chicago, recommends applying a mousse from the roots to the ends of the hair before wet styling. Thereafter, make use of a detangling wet brush to separate the waves.

Lightly squeeze your hair in the form of a compass to encourage a nice wave pattern to form without the frizz. Avoid messing with your hair while it’s wet to avoid your desired style from scattering. Let your hair dry naturally; also do not touch or apply anything on the hair until it dries. After the hair is completely dry, you can use a claw clip to add a dash of elegance to your look.

Wet Hair Styling For Type 3 Hair

Curly hair gets a lot of benefits from wet styling. For this hair type, it is best to style your hair while still in the shower and your hair still has a lot of moisture.

Apply hair milk on your wet hair to get medium curls. For stronger curls, apply a curl cream to soften them. Since curly hair tangles easily, use a wide-tooth comb to gently remove the tangles without breaking your hair. Afterward, apply a product of your choice to hold the style in place. You can then squeeze out the excess water and style your hair as you wish. There are many curly hairstyles you can choose from.

Wet Styling

Wet Hairstyling for Type 4 Hair

Type 4 hair is coily or kinky hair. Its curls are a lot tighter than other hair types. The hair also tangles easily and is more susceptible to frizz. Wet styling is a must for you if your hair falls under this category. This is because wet styling arranges and keeps each coil together in a uniform texture. Wet styling keeps kinky hair shiny, moisturized, and intact.

To begin wet styling your kinky hair, you need to divide your hair into sections; preferably, four partitions. Next, you apply a hydrating lotion to each section and highlight the coils. Use a wide-tooth comb or your fingers to detangle. Layering hair oil at the top helps in sealing the cuticle.
When you’re done with styling, just like wavy hair, allow your hair to dry without disturbance. Do not brush, touch, or comb your hair as the curls can untwist and become messy.

Depending on the style you want to achieve, you might need to add clip-in extensions to elevate the look. You can find more detailed information on how to install clip-in extensions for type 4 hair here.

Wet Styling Techniques for Curly

Type 3 hair benefits the most from wet styling. That is why we’re taking a closer look at the different techniques you can use for wet styling if you have curly hair. This way, you can easily change up your look by simply switching to a different wet styling technique. Here are the techniques you can use.

1. Finger-coiling

This technique is to achieve an enhanced curl definition; it is used especially when the hair has been straightened to help restore the pattern of the curls back to their natural state.

Finger-coiling is a fairly easy technique, all that is required is your index finger. If you want to finger-coil your hair, divide your hair into partitions and apply any curl cream of your choice to your soaking wet hair. Comb through the hair for an even application.

Coil each of the curls tightly around your index finger, working through each partition. Apply an enhancing curl gel to hold the shape of the ringlets. Finally, squeeze out excess water and allow the hair to dry and style as desired.

2. Shingling

Shingling is a technique that is ideal for hair that experiences a lot of shrinkage. This makes it perfect for types 3 and 4 hair.

In this styling technique, products aimed at enhancing curls such as curling creams, leave-in conditioners, or hair gel are applied to the hair. The shingling method requires you to separate and smooth the product through each curl.

Although shingling is a time-consuming process, with the right products, it is an incredible way of achieving fresh-looking curls.

3. Twist-out

Twist out is the most common wet styling technique, it is also the easiest. To create a twist out, the first step is to clean and detangle your hair. Next, part your hair into 4 partitions, after which styling products should be applied. Finally, create your twists or flat twists then allow your hair to sit overnight or air-dry while going about your daily activities.

When you’re ready, undo the twists and style as you wish. Simple, right?

4. Braid-out

The braid-out technique is similar to the twist-out technique. However, instead of two-strand twists/ flat twists, three-strand braids are made. Braid outs enhance your curl patterns and give your hair a wave-like definition.

This procedure creates less frizz, unlike the twist-out method. It is terrific for people who do not like shrinkage as braids tend to stretch out hair while still giving it the wavy look.

To accomplish the braid out technique, you have to divide your hair into eight sections and braid/twist each part. Twirl the finishes of the braids and afterward, pin the twists to your head to get them into place.

How to Get the Perfect Wet Hairstyle Each Time

Nailing the wet hairstyle every time is as simple as following a few tips. It doesn’t matter what your hair type is. These tips will work for you. All you need is to practice and you’ll get a hang of it. Here are the tips.

Wet STyling

1. Evenly Section Your Hair

Always make sure that you section your hair evenly. This ensures even distribution of the hair products you’re applying. As a result, you’ll be able to easily achieve your desired look.

2. Apply Products On Wet Hair

The point of wet hairstyling is to style the hair while it’s still wet. Apply products from the root to the tip and massage them gently into the hair for maximum penetration.

3. Style While Wet

Your hair should be shaped quickly before your hair starts drying. When it comes to wet styling, time is critical. You need to work fast in order to get the results you want.

4. Cover Your Hair

While waiting for your hair to dry, you should cover it to avoid interference. The best way to do this is by wrapping it with a silk scarf. You should also avoid touching your hair until it is fully dry.

If you’ve not tried wet hairstyling before or you simply didn’t know how to do it right, you have no excuses now. It is simple, effective, and suitable for all hair types. All the information you need is contained right here. Simply put, apply your preferred product to your wet hair, detangle, style, and let it dry. You’re now ready to go. Just carry a compact mirror to check up on your style and put back a few stray hairs.

It can be hard to find the perfect skincare routine that suits your specific needs. However, some extremely useful pieces of advice will help you get flawlessly flawless skin. For one, avoid putting on makeup if your face is oily as this will only make it worse. You should also drink plenty of water and eat healthy to look your best.

Skin Serums And Natural Facial Masks

One thing that you might have to invest in is a skin serum or oil. This helps treat scars, dark spots, acne, and stretch marks. Of course, you should always consult your dermatologist before buying anything so you know what sort of ingredients it contains. It could be possible that the product has harmful chemicals which are bad for your skin. The best option to reduce inflammation and treat skin is Terasana serums that are completely natural and organic. The ingredients can be found in nature and will treat your skin well by nourishing it. When it comes to skincare, facial masks made from natural ingredients are the way to go. You can try making one yourself or you can even buy one somewhere else. The point is that they are efficient in removing dead skin cells so your face will feel smoother and look brighter than ever before.

Cleansing Brushes And Makeup Sponges

Make sure your cleansing brush offers better cleanliness so you use less product when washing your face later on. It could be a good idea to get two facial brushes so you get the exfoliating and cleansing power of both products combined into just one device. This way, you’ll have an easier time cleaning your face without doing too much damage to your skin.

Invest in a good makeup sponge because if you use one that’s dirty, it will transfer all sorts of bacteria from your face to the product itself. This could lead to breakouts and other skin irritations. You should only use an old makeup sponge once and then replace it with a new one. Be careful when buying them because they can be pretty costly depending on where you live.

Picking The Right Sunscreen

You’ll need to pick the right sunscreen for your face if you want to keep it healthy and young-looking for as long as possible. No matter what skin type or tone you have, there is no such thing as universally flattering sun protection which you should invest in at least once in yours! Just make sure the sunscreen you prefer has a high SPF so it can protect your skin from the harmful rays of the sun.

Healthy Drinking And Eating

To look your best, you have to start drinking plenty of water. This takes place when you have about eight glasses of it a day for several weeks in a row. Water gets rid of the toxins in your body so it’s good for overall health too. It can also help improve your mood which makes it easier for you to approach all sorts of tasks throughout the day with the right amount of energy and enthusiasm. Of course, eating healthy is something that everyone should be doing regularly because it reduces acne and other skin conditions significantly. You can try taking some vitamins or supplements if necessary but there are lots of foods out there that can do the trick. For instance, fish oil supplements have been known to be good for your skin because they reduce redness and other common signs of acne.

Talking With Your Dermatologist

One final thing you might want to consider is talking with a dermatologist who has experience in this particular field. You can always ask them for advice that could help make your skincare routine more efficient than ever before. We may have the answer to all your hair woes and the best part is, it might already be in your beauty stash. You’ve probably heard of the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask (and if you haven’t, welcome to the internet!) It’s one of Amazon’s best-selling beauty products and a holy grail in the skincare community.

The cult-favourite has amassed thousands of 5-star reviews on Amazon and Youtube, and even celebrities, like Khloe Kardashian and Mindy Kaling, have raved about its incredible benefits. But, did you know this skin saviour could also be used in your hair?

This DIY hair clay mask gained popularity after TikTok user @curlsbykeish posted a video using the clay mask to bring her curls back to life. The video has racked up over 18 million views and inspired tons of TikTok users to try the clay mask in their hair. The star of the hair mask is bentonite clay, a mineral-rich clay that will cleanse, strengthen and define your curls in just one step. Below, we’re giving you this inside scoop on this multi-tasking hair mask.

What is Bentonite Clay?

Bentonite clay is a natural clay that is formed from volcanic ash. It has been used to purge impurities from the hair, skin, and body for hundreds of years. The multi-purpose clay has been used to detox skin, heal infections or acne, and even treat stomach issues. Today it is formulated in many skincare and cosmetic products and you can find it in products like shampoo, acne treatments, and even toothpaste.

Bentonite clay is special from other clays because it has negatively charged molecules. Most toxins found in the hair, skin, and body have positively charged molecules. When activated with water or apple cider vinegar, the clay produces an ionic charge that attracts and removes toxins from your hair, skin, and body. It also contains natural minerals like calcium, magnesium, and iron.

Fun Fact: Bentonite clay gets its name from Fort Benton, Wyoming, where there are large deposits of it. But, it’s found all over the world. It’s also called Montmorillonite clay, named after a region in France which has a lot of it.

Benefits of Using Bentonite Clay Hair Mask

Bentonite clay has tons of amazing hair benefits from enhanced shine to curl-defining effects. Here are some of the “mane” benefits:

  • Draws out impurities from your hair and scalp. When activated with water or apple cider vinegar the clay has a negative charge that attracts positively charged toxins, like product build-up to give your hair a deep cleanse. Essentially, the hair clay acts as a vacuum for your hair follicles for the five to 20 minutes that it’s on.

  • Promotes Hair Growth. Bentonite clay is filled with minerals like sodium, potassium, and calcium that are essential for hair growth. Using this hair mask weekly will fortify your hair with these essential minerals and prevent breakage. If you’re looking to immediately add length to your hair, add in some hair extensions. They come in different styles and colours to replicate your natural hair. Your extensions deserve just as much love as your natural hair, so keep them tangle free with the Luxy Loop Brush.

  • Eliminates Dandruff. If you struggle with dandruff, apply the mask to your scalp to soak up excess sebum and kill the fungus and bacteria that cause dandruff. The deep clean will remove dead skin and toxins so that healthy hair can grow. It’s the perfect way to maintain a healthy scalp.

  • Enhances Shine. If you use a lot of dry shampoo or thick products in your hair routine it can create a film on your strands that gives your hair a grey tone. If you don’t cleanse the buildup from your hair it can hinder your hair’s natural ability to shine. Removing the buildup will also allow your hair to absorb your products better.

  • Softens and Conditions Hair. The minerals in bentonite clay will soften and condition your tresses, this means less tangles, more manageable hair, and less breakage! It’s great for heat-damaged or colour-treated hair.

  • Defines Curls. Curly girls swear by bentonite clay for their curls because it helps to clump them together and define them. Use the hair clay before a wash and go and you’ll be amazed by how bouncy your curls look.

Benefits for Natural Hair

Bentonite clay is a favourite in the natural and curly hair community, because it has moisturizing, conditioning, and clarifying properties and can remove buildup. It makes an excellent addition to a curly hair regimen. Natural hair tends to be dry so it needs lots of thick, moisturizing products which can leave a film on the hair and weigh down the delicate strands. Using the hair clay will clarify your hair which will allow your other products to work better, and help with curl clumping and shine. It’s especially great to clarify your hair and scalp before or after it’s been in a protective style.

Natural hair is very delicate and can break easily. The bentonite hair clay has sodium, potassium, and calcium- which are minerals that are essential for hair growth. When applied to your scalp it can also remove dead skin cells and cleanse follicles, which aids in healthy hair growth.

Benefits for Low Porosity Hair

If you have low porosity hair, bentonite clay will be your new best friend. Low porosity hair has an excess of positively charged ions which can make your hair look dull, frizzy, and difficult to absorb products. Bentonite clay has negatively charged ions and when applied to the hair can neutralize the positively charged ions. The result is frizz-free, shiny hair.

How to Make a Bentonite Clay Hair Mask

Now that you’re familiar with the benefits of bentonite clay it’s time to add this hair mask into your hair care routine. The main ingredient for this DIY is the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask, which you can purchase on Amazon or at most health food stores. Here’s everything else you’ll need to get started:

  • Non-metal bowl, measuring cup mixing utensils (using metal can activate the clay before it reaches your hair, reducing its ability to detoxify your hair)
  • ½ cup of bentonite clay powder (we recommend using the Aztec Secret Indian Healing Clay Mask)
  • 3-9 tbsp of water (dependent on whether you add other liquids)
  • 6 tbsp of unfiltered apple cider vinegar (optional)
  • 3 tablespoons of your favorite hair oils, such as coconut, castor, jojoba or argan oil (optional)

Step 1:

To make the bentonite clay hair mask, add ½ cup of bentonite clay powder into a non-metal bowl.

Step 2:

Next, dilute the apple cider vinegar with water: three parts water to one part apple cider vinegar. This step is super important because apple cider vinegar is very acidic and can irritate your scalp if it is not diluted. Apple cider vinegar has tons of amazing hair benefits, it treats scalp conditions like dandruff, improves shiness, and increases moisture retention.

Step 3:

Next, combine bentonite clay and diluted apple cider vinegar into the bowl and mix until you get a yogurt-like consistency.

Step 4:

The last step is to add your favorite hair oils for extra hair benefits. Some of our favorites are coconut oil, to hydrate hair and lock in moisture, pracaxi oil, to strengthen and protect hair, and grapeseed oil, to stimulate hair growth and soften brittle hair.

How to Use It

When your mask is ready, section your hair, and saturate each section with the mask. The mask should be applied to damp or wet hair with focus on the scalp. Keep a spray bottle handy so you can mist any parts of your hair that dry out before you can work the mask through. Once your hair is fully coated, you can clip it up or cover with a plastic cap or heat cap for extra penetration. A hooded dryer or steamer can also be used.

The mask should be left on for at least five and up to 25 minutes to soak up all the benefits. Unfortunately, this isn’t the type of mask you can leave-in and run errands with, but it’s perfect for an at-home spa day!

After the treatment, you can shampoo and condition your hair as you normally would. It’s important that you make sure all the hair clay is removed from your hair before moving on to the next step. We love to follow up with a deep conditioner or hot oil treatment after the hair clay to give our strands a boost of hydration!

When it comes to how often you can use the hair clay, we like to apply the same rule of thumb for bentonite clay masks for your hair and skin. You should only use this treatment once a week or whenever you feel like your hair and scalp need a deep cleanse!

Got leftovers? Not to worry! If you got a little too excited and made way more than you need, you can always use the extras on your face and detox your pores and curls at the same time. Like anything you apply to your skin, make sure you do a patch test before slathering it all over your face.

If you still have leftovers you can store your bentonite clay in a closed lid container in the fridge for up to a week- longer than that and you risk it growing bacteria (yuck!)

Side Effects

Bentonite clay hair masks have tons of amazing hair benefits, but it can dry out your hair. That’s why we recommend only using this mask once a week, because over cleansing your hair and scalp could lead to more oil production.

The Final Verdict

It’s safe to say that we are absolutely obsessed with this simple but effective hair clay that cleanses your scalp and strengthens your hair. With most new products it will take a few uses to really notice a difference in your hair however, this affordable treatment will leave your hair moisturized, hydrated, and frizz-free after the first wash. What more could you ask for?

Have you tried the bentonite clay hair mask before?

The halls are decked, mistletoe hung, and the first snow of the season is covering the front yard. The holidays are a time of warmth and joy, however, in the midst of Christmas gift shopping, party planning, and gift wrapping, it’s easy to leave getting ready for the big night until the last minute! This year, don’t let your hair fall flat in the midst of the Christmas chaos. We’ve rounded up our favorite holiday hairstyles and party hairstyles that will keep you in the festive spirit well into the new year.

Party hairstyles

1. Big curls and sexy waves

Party hairstyles

Ditch the bobby pins and hair ties and bring your whole look together with sleek, voluminous curls or sexy waves. If you feel like you want an extra edge, try pinning a small section of hair back with a sparkling pin or hair accessory.

All you need to achieve this look is a wide-barrel curling iron, between 1 ½ to 2 inches and some Luxy Hair extensions for gorgeous length and volume. Still lacking inspiration? Watch this video for three different ways to get soft, head-turning curls.

2. Holiday Glam Waves

Party Hairstyles

Take your big curls up a notch with holiday-inspired glam waves. Perfect for your office Christmas party, a holiday date night, or your annual family celebration, these waves strike the perfect balance between Old Hollywood glamour and modern style.

This style gets its signature vintage glamour vibe from its inward-facing curls, as opposed to the more modern Victoria’s Secret waves that curl away from the face. Add in some sparkling hair pins and your holiday look is set.

Psst: want to know our secret for long-lasting curls? Find out here.

3. Side-swept double braid

Party Hairstyles

Would you believe Marta started out with short hair for this party hairstyle? Start off by clipping in your Luxy Hair extensions and curling your hair. Then, take a large section from one side of your head and French braid it toward the back, all the way until the nape of your neck. Secure this side with bobby pins, then create a smaller three-strand braid on the other side of your face, tucking the ends behind your ear.

4. Sleek High Pony

Party hairstyles

A sleek, high ponytail can immediately elevate any outfit and show off your sculpted cheekbones or that perfect contour. Consider this hairstyle for the holiday season when you’re going for a sharp but minimal overall look, or when you need the perfect complement to a show-stopping outfit. Add a drop of hair oil to smooth flyaways, and you’re good to go.

5. Fishtail Ponytail

Party Hairstyles

A more refined take on the classic high ponytail is the fishtail ponytail, perfect for dressing up or down as the holiday season approaches. If you’re the type who loves keeping her hair out of her face, this is perfect for you. Have short hair or medium hair? Consider treating yourself to some Luxy Hair extensions to achieve this look.

6. Fishtail Braid Half Updo

Party hairstyles

For a more intricate style, turn to the holiday half updo with fishtail braids. Gorgeous waves and feathery, pinned-back pieces make this style as magical as the holidays themselves. If you want to give your hair some extra dimensions, length,  and volume, add in some Luxy Hair extensions for extra glam with minimal effort.

7. Twisted Bun

Party Hairstyles

Have a fabulous formal event on the calendar and just can’t decide what to do with your hair? This updo hairstyle is so simple to recreate at home, and takes almost no time at all! The chic spiral element is the focus of this updo, perfectly complemented by a few loose strands around the face and volume at the crown of the head.

8. Headband Updo

Party Hairstyles
The holidays are a perfect time to put those hair accessories to good use, like the gold leaf headband used in this party hairstyle. This high-pony-turned-elegant-updo is perfect for ringing in the new year or spending the evening out with friends. Feel free to accent with whatever headband or hair accessory you choose! In the case of New Year’s Eve, the more sparkle, the better.

9. Knotted Updo

Party hairstyles

So pretty, and yet so simple. Crisscrossing strands in the back of this updo give this look some extra detail that really elevates the whole style. Luxy Hair extensions are perfect for giving you volume at the crown and length to create this spiraled beauty. Accessorize with a pair of statement earrings or a chunky necklace to keep all eyes on you.

10. Top Knot

Party Hairstyles

Keep your holiday look simple-yet-styled with the classic but modern half-top knot. Some gorgeous waves make for an unforgettable holiday look when paired with your glam New Year’s Eve outfit. All you need is a hair tie, bobby pins, and some texturizing spray to give your half up half down hair that perfect messy bun look and piecey waves. Glam up this look with your killer holiday outfit and accessories.

11. Hollywood Waves For Short Hair

Party hairstyles

Have shorter hair? No problem. Hit the holiday glam mark this year with classic Hollywood waves for short hair. The holidays are a great time to bring out these waves, especially if your prom days are behind you and dressing up is a rare occasion. All you need to achieve this look is a wide-barrel curling wand, some hairspray, and a side part. Start by curling the side of your head with less hair away from your face. As you work around your head, begin curling inward for that classic Old Hollywood look.

12. Faux fishtail half updo

Party hairstyles

This cute and easy holiday hairstyle is so simple to create, your Christmas cookies won’t even be done baking by the time you’re finished! Start by creating a half ponytail at the back of your head, then flip the ponytail inside out and thread the ends through. Next, take a strand of hair and twist it around the elastic to cover it, securing it underneath the ponytail with a bobby pin. Then, take small sections of hair from each side of your face, twisting them toward the back, and creating another topsy tail. Again, take a strand of hair, twist it around the elastic to hide it, and your party hairstyle is complete.

13. Relaxed Waves

Party Hairstyles

Sometimes the holidays call for understated glamour, and that’s exactly what this look, inspired by Gigi Hadid, will give you.

Party hairstyles

The outfit, accessories, and makeup options are endless with this style! Try a bold red lip and a winged cat eye or put the focus on your accessories with drop earrings and a statement necklace.

14. Elegant Bun

Party hairstyles

Rushing to get ready but still want to look put together? Try out this elegant bun that only takes two minutes to recreate! While it looks complicated, this look is all yours with a few twists, turns, and bobby pins.

15. Twist Back Hairstyle

Party hairstyles

Looking like a princess doesn’t have to be difficult this holiday season, especially with this half up half down hairstyle. Use your Luxy Hair extensions for that mermaid length, or keep your hair natural for an equally pretty vibe. All you need to achieve this look is a clear elastic hair tie and a large-barrel curling wand. You’ll be holiday party ready in no time!

16. Princess-inspired half updo

Party hairstyles

This party hairstyles is a bit more intricate, however, if you’re off to an exquisite formal function, it’s worth the time to create. Start with a loose three-strand braid down the middle of your head, then, take sections of hair from the front of your face and twist them toward the back, pulling the ends through the knots on the braid. Continue this process until halfway down the braid, using bobby pins to secure all the strands.

17. Ballerina Bun

Party Hairstyles

At a loss for how to style your hair when the holiday season throws a formal affair your way? A ballerina bun is an easy way to bring your whole look together. The key to this style is to keep the edges sleek, but the bun just a little loose. That way, your finished look will still have that natural and effortless flair.

18. Met gala inspired tight curls

Party hairstyles

Inspired by Amanda Seyfried’s soft yet regal hairstyle at the 2018 Met Gala, this party hairstyle with tight curls and a glitzy tiara is an elegant complimentary hairstyle to a strapless, formal gown. The key to this hairstyle is to use a smaller barrel curling wand (about 1 inch) and to curl all the hair strands the same way to achieve those princess curls. Finish off with an embellished headpiece and let your prince whisk you away to the ball.

19. Braided Wreath Updo

Party hairstyles

There is something magical about the holiday season, and this time of year just welcomes romantic hairstyles. This braided wreath or “halo” party hairstyle is the perfect option. This hairstyle uses strategically placed Luxy Hair extensions wefts in order to create that full and thick twisted halo, while fishtail braids accentuate the entire updo.

20. Fishtail Updo

Party hairstyles

The holiday season calls for statement-making dresses and formal shirts. If your holiday ensemble has details in the back that you’d like to showcase, this fishtail updo is for you.

21. Topsy tail half updo for short hair

Party hairstyles

This party hairstyle may look difficult, however, only takes a few twists and turns to achieve. Twist two sections of hair on either side of your head and join them in middle. Then, add another small ponytail underneath the hair elastic already there. Split the section into two, and flip the remaining bottom of your hair into the small hole you just created, and you’re done.

22. Double Rope Braid Bun

Party hairstyles

Put a twist on your classic twisted bun with this double strand version. Start by sectioning your hair into two low ponytails on each side, then split each section into two. Twist each side tightly, then begin to twist these sections around one another and secure at the end with an elastic. Finally, twist each section into a bun and pin them up. Feel free to skip on the hairspray if you want a looser look, or go in with a few spritzes if you’re getting ready for a long night.

23. Mermaid Braid

Party hairstyles

If you’re wearing a strapless or one-shoulder dress, this ultra volume mermaid side braid is the ideal complementary party hairstyle. Combining topsy tails with a fishtail braid, this side braid is chic, feminine, and most importantly, super easy to create once you’ve mastered the basic hair techniques. Clip in a few wefts from your Luxy Hair extensions to add mega volume and thickness to the braid.

24. Side Dutch Braid

Party hairstyles

Ladies, grab your Luxy Hair extensions for this one! The holiday season just isn’t complete without a bit of drama and flair, is it? This side Dutch braid does just that with its cascading waterfall look and forehead-sweeping style.

25. Twisted messy bun for short hair

Party hairstyles

Guests are arriving, the food is still in the oven, and you haven’t even gotten dressed yet! Rock this twisted updo party hairstyle when you need to get glam in a flash. If you’re on a time crunch, feel free to skip the hair extensions this time, or, if you have a spare minute, add in a few wefts for some extra volume in your bun without the fuss of teasing and hairspray-ing. Throw in a few curls to frame your face you’re good to go!

Feeling inspired by Billie Eilish’s new blonde bombshell transformation? — Us too. Going from black to blonde is a major hair change and we are here for it! But as great as it looks in the final outcome, it can be a tough journey to get there. If you’re anything like us, you’ve experimented with hair colors, box dyes and at-home haircuts in the last year — which can add another layer of difficulty to the overall transformation. Not to worry, if there’s a will, there’s a way! And we’ve got you covered (with lots of bleach and conditioner) to get there!

We’ve consulted with professional Toronto colorist Justine Frisoni to give us a step by step process of what to expect when making such a drastic change to your hair color. If you aren’t ready for a drastic color change yet, an easy way to switch up your look is through hair extensions. Experiment with different shades before reaching for permanent dye.

Step 1: Keep Your Hair Healthy

Before starting on your color journey it’s important to consider the health & integrity of your hair. Because the color process is lengthy and harsh on your hair – it must be healthy!

Start with conditioning treatments, minimize the use of heat tools, and swap out cheaper products for salon quality shampoos and conditioners (sulfate/paraben free). Trimming any dead ends is also important as you want your hair to be strong enough to handle the bleaching process! Once your hair has been prepped to optimal health you can start the dyeing process.

Step 2: Do a Hair Analysis

On your first salon visit bring a coffee and a snack! “Time is going to be your friend for this transformation”, says Frisoni. The first step to this process is a thorough hair analysis. A strand test will most likely be conducted to see how the bleach will take to your hair. Once this is done and you’re good to begin, your colorist will start the “bleach out” process.

You can expect to have your entire head bleached, except for about 1 inch of your root — your scalp is a heat conductor and therefore will process your root bleach faster than the rest of your hair, so it’s important to do this step last. Your colorist will bleach your roots once the rest of your hair has had time to process.

Step 3: Color Stripping

This is a tedious process and therefore you should expect the color stripping to be repeated a few times before you reach the “pale yellow” stage. The stages of your color will go from black to red, red to orange, orange to bright yellow, and then ultimately to a pale yellow where toner can be applied to achieve your desired blonde. If your hair can handle second bleaching within your first salon visit your colorist will repeat the bleach out again. If not, they’ll suggest coming back after your hair has had time to recover — typically six weeks.

Once you’ve stripped your color in the bleach out process, you’ll most likely leave the salon with an orangish color depending on your personal progress. Frisoni suggests having your colorist tone your hair to a flattering shade for the weeks in between the stripping process so that you can tolerate the tones you may be left with.

Note: It is important to wait the appropriate time before re-bleaching your hair as you should have the desired length of a 1-inch root before re-bleaching. If you rush this part of the process you can risk overlapping which can cause breakage. By waiting too long to re-bleach you may risk color banding — different shades of blonde lines due to uneven lifting.

Step 4: Repeat

Depending on your hair’s starting color & strength, you may have to repeat the stripping process for a third and or fourth time to reach the pale yellow stage. Billie Eilish’s colorist confirmed it took four dye sessions for Eilish to erase the jet black she started from. This color stage is needed in order to tone your hair to a softer blonde.

During the color lifting you may notice some areas lighten quicker than others, this just means you will have to spot treat specific areas to have your base all the same color. Because the bleach out process is extremely hard on your hair, Frisoni suggests having a “bond builder” blended into your bleach formula. This will help protect your hair from extra damage, however, it is important to note that bond builder slightly dilutes the bleach, but your hair will thank you in the end!

Step 5: Time to Add Hair Color

Color! Whether you’re wanting to go full Marilyn Monroe or a little softer blonde like Eilish it’s all in the toner! In Billie Eilish’s case, she opted for an Ash Blonde tone and this is a solid coloring. Frisoni always suggests bringing inspo pics to make sure your colorist has an exact idea of what tones you’re wanting to achieve for your final look.

Being a blonde is no joke! Maintenance and care are just as important as the process it took to get there. Maintenance on your color can typically be every eight weeks to include; root touch-up, tone and trim if needed. Nourishing your hair is always important, especially after such a harsh process, so routinely using conditioning treatments and purple shampoo to leave brassy tones out is key!

We’ve done the research for you and now it’s your time to shine like a superstar! Follow these easy steps to go from black to blonde hair and let us know what you think of your new look!

Fact: Finding the right curl cream can make all the difference when styling curly or natural hair. Not only do they help to define and style your curls, the right curly hair products will also strengthen, nourish, and moisturize your mane from the inside out.

Unlike gels or mousse, curl creams provide hold without leaving your hair looking crunchy. A good curl cream will enhance your natural curls by encouraging curl formation, and allowing them to be the best version of themselves.

To get the scoop on why every curly girl needs a curl cream we turned to celebrity hair stylist, Anthony Perez. “Curl creme is great to properly hydrate, moisturize and define the natural texture,” says Perez. He reaches for curl creams when he’s trying to enhance his client’s natural texture and add some moisturize to dry strands. “Curly hair the majority of the time is prone to dryness, due to the shape of the cuticle, so having something coating each strand helps beautify the curl pattern,” says Perez.

Curl creams tend to work best when worked through wet hair, evenly coating each strand. This helps to lock in moisture and hydrate your curls. After you shampoo (here are some of our fav shampoos for curly hair) and condition, apply the cream to slightly dripping hair and comb through. Once you’ve distributed the cream through your curls they should start to clump together in their natural curl pattern. Once all of your hair is fully coated, scrunch excess water out and diffuse for bouncy, shiny curls.

Not all curl creams are made equal. Those with thicker hair should look for thicker creams that are formulated with rich ingredients. If you have finer hair, check out lighter formulas like gel-cream hybrids so that they don’t weigh your curls down. If you find that products don’t penetrate your hair well, you can add water to help dilute so that your hair can soak up all the moisture. If your hair is super parched, pair your curl cream with an oil to lock everything in.

If you’re ready to add a curl cream to your hair care routine look no further. We’ve rounded up 15 drugstore curl creams that won’t break the bank but will leave you hair looking like a million bucks.

It’s no secret that curly hair requires different care techniques than other hair types, and one of the more important steps is finding the right shampoo.

The best shampoo for curly hair is one without harsh chemicals that will help treat the curls and keep them intact. Curls can lose their shape over time, especially if the hair is damaged or unhealthy. Curly hair is also more prone to dryness, meaning you need a shampoo that will also nourish and moisturize your curls.

When looking for the best shampoo for curly hair you also have to consider your curl type. Whether kinky or wavy, knowing your curl type will not only hep you determine the best shampoo and other products for your curly hair, but how to use these products in a way that will be most beneficial for your hair.

What’s your curl type?

We have all the information you need to determine your curl type here, but to sum it up, use the Andrew Walker curl chart. Walker, hairstylist to stars like Oprah Winfrey identified four types of curls simply arranging them from Type 1 to Type 4. The number refers to the type or family of curls; straight, wavy, curly, and coily/kinky.

The second part is the lettering or the ABC’s. The letter refers to how tightly wound the curls are. To break it down, Type 1s are those who have naturally straight hair, while Type 2s are wavy-hair ladies. 3s are those with spiral curls and 4s have kinks and coils.

Type 1

Type 2

Type 3

Type 4

The difference between straight hair and curly hair

The scientific difference between straight hair and curly hair comes down to the chemical makeup. All hair, whether curly or straight, has two major components: the shaft and the follicle. The shafts are the strands we can see, and the follicle is the part of the hair within the skin of scalp. The shape of the follicle is a major factor in hair texture, the follicle for straight hair is perfectly round where the follicle for curly hair is more of an oval shape. Fun fact, the flatter the oval, the curlier the hair. The difference between straight and curly hair literally starts at the root!

The way that the hair tunnels into the scalp is also a factor in texture, straight hair follicles tunnel vertically into the skin/scalp while curly hair follicles angles into the skin, which make the hair curve, creating a curl.

This tunneling of the follicle is also what creates dryness for a lot of curly hair girls as the natural sebum or oil created in the scalp isn’t able to travel as well into the strands when curved.

Care for your curly hair

To help prevent dryness, adjust your wash routine, and take some tips from Deva-Certified Stylist, Emily Weiser who has worked with all kinds of hair. When it comes to curly hair, she has some expert advice.

“All hair types shouldn’t be washed more than 1- 2 times a week,” Weiser said. “Washing too frequent can cause dryness and an over production of natural oil at the roots.”

It should be noted that curly hair, also doesn’t mean thick hair. There are fine or thin hair girls with curls and waves also. While all our tips apply, hair extensions are also a great tool to help add volume to finer, curly hair, or add length to short curly hair. Just like natural hair, clip-in hair extensions can be easily curled and styled, curls typically stay in for a couple days too, so they’re easy to apply and ready when you are.

Trims and haircuts also work wonders to prevent dryness and breakage. Consistently getting rid of dead weight prevents damaged hair from weighing on strands and pulling on healthy curls.

“I’d say with 2C hair, getting 2-3 haircuts a year is all that’s needed,” Weiser  said.

“Of course, if someone likes their hair short and/or colors their hair more frequently then maybe 4-5 haircuts a year is more appropriate.”

If you’re looking for some short curly hair inspo, check out our 23 short haircuts for curly hair.

When it comes to the best curly hair products or best shampoo for curly hair, here are the top ingredients to avoid, according to the Curly Girl Method that works for all hair types: non-water soluble formulas, silicones, fragrances and alcohol. All of these dry out the hair and scalp.

The best shampoo for curly hair should include natural oils like coconut or argan, castor oil also works well. Look for natural ingredients and shampoos that are sulfate and paraben-free.
